About This Cause
Parkinson's Ireland was established in 1987 to assist and represent people living with Parkinson's disease in Ireland. We work every day to assist people living with this incurable illness and strive to help everyone affected by this terrible disease to maintain a quality of life and dignity through their journey with Parkinson’s disease. (1) Nursing Outreach Project - we are conducting an educational outreach programme, led by our Parkinson’s disease Nurse specialist, whereby we offer free educational sessions to Nurses and Carers. Currently we are targeting Nursing Homes with plans to expand the programme to include hospitals and community-based Nurses (for example public health Nurses and HSE Carers). Our ambition is to build a professional network of nurses and carers, establishing a baseline of latest evidence-based practice and consistently high levels of care. (2) National Parkinson’s Freephone Helpline 1800 359359 – We operate Ireland’s National Parkinson's Freephone advice helpline. This helpline provides advice to people with Parkinson’s, family and carers. From the newly-diagnosed who have many fears to those experiencing difficulties or simply seeking advice on their journey with Parkinson’s disease, our helpline is an invaluable source of advice and comfort. We incur telecoms costs in addition to specialist nurse’s salary and support staffing. (3) Parkinson's Publications - We produce a Quarterly Magazine to 2000 members throughout Ireland via our 15 Branches throughout Ireland. The Parkinson’s Magazine is a source of advice and information for our members as well as providing social and welfare information, helping to reduce isolation, enriching lives and empowering people within the Parkinson’s community (people with Parkinson's, family and carers). We also produce and distribute Parkinson’s Information Leaflets through our nationwide Branch network. Parkinson’s Ireland provides these supports and services without any government funding. We rely on local and national fundraising; every cent raised helps us provide our services.
