Mission Statement

Friends of the Elderly Ireland is a volunteer based Irish charity, with links to an International Federation across Europe and the Americas. Our services reach out to those experiencing poverty, loneliness and isolation. Our mission is to alleviate loneliness and isolation and change lives of older people for the better. Our vision is a society where older people have equality of opportunity and improved quality of life.

About This Cause

Founded in Dublin Ireland in 1980, we are a volunteer based charity. Our services include a home visitation program, a Nationwide friendly call service by phone, social clubs, cabarets and educational clubs. We also run a hamper program to those in need financially and a Nationwide birthday project providing cards, gifts and hampers with practical items. We provide opportunities for day trips in Ireland and holidays away. We are all faiths and none, and believe in the unique worth of every person. We advocate for mutual respect and dignity for all and promote individual choice and independent living. We celebrate positive aging. We run an intergenerational program and work with many local and overseas students. Our referrals come from GPs and health care professionals as well as concerned family members, and of course self referral is also an option. We are governed by a voluntary Board of Directors, have a small staff team and rely on our 380 + volunteers to achieve our mission and goals. We have approx. 1000 members accessing services, we deliver 2400 hampers per year, this year we aim to make/take 50,000 calls to and from older people, and associated partners across Ireland. We are 43 years old this year and continue to diversify our services to meet need.
