About This Cause
Milford Care Centre (MCC) is the HSE-designated Specialist Palliative Care, Hospice at Home and Palliative Day Care services provider for patients and their families in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. MCC delivers these vital services from a number of bases in Limerick City, Ennis, Newcastlewest, Nenagh and Thurles, and Milford’s Hospice at Home service has been identified as the most developed in the country. In 1988 Milford Hospice cared for a total of 142 patients, while last year the figure increased to in excess of 1,500 and this is a testament as to how these services have developed over that period of time Hospice care in the past was very much identified as a service supporting patients with cancer, but today it is more readily available for patients with other life-limiting conditions including respiratory and heart conditions, motor neuron disease and other chronic illnesses. In all, about one in five of MCCs patients are experiencing such conditions. Milford aims to ensure that all of its service users receive a holistic patient-centred approach to care and that their families are fully supported throughout all stages. The general approach to hospice care is that people don’t have to pay for the services and so Milford provides the services at no direct cost to patients. As the designated Specialist Palliative Care service provider in the region, MCC has public funding support through the existence of a Section 39 service level agreement with the HSE. However, the Centre relies greatly on community fundraising to make a vital contribution to the overall operating budget for the on- going provision of services. Fundraising events such as Sunflower Days and Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning are national hospice events, but all of the funds raised locally through these events are put to use locally. Milford Hospice Harvest Fair is one of MCCs largest fundraising events, assisted by hundreds of volunteers, and it has traditionally been a day where the people of the Mid-West have given generously of their time and their financial support to help with the work of the hospice and the services it provides. There is tremendous goodwill from local communities who play a vital role in developing hospice services and Milford is grateful for the ongoing public support.
