Mission Statement
The aim of Fighting Words is to help children and young people, and adults who did not have this opportunity as children, to discover and harness the power of their own imaginations and creative writing skills. At its core, Fighting Words is also about something much broader and more inclusive. It is about using the creative practice of writing and storytelling to strengthen our children and teenagers – from a wide range of backgrounds – to be resilient, creative and successful shapers of their own lives.
About This Cause
Since January 2009, Fighting Words has provided free story-writing workshops for thousands of primary and second level students as well as to adults with additional needs. Fighting Words caters for all forms of creative writing, including fiction, playwriting, journalism, script writing and film making, poetry, songwriting, memoir and graphic fiction. All programs at Fighting Words are free of charge and everyone is welcome. The mentoring is provided by teams of trained volunteer writing tutors. We have over 450 registered volunteers from all walks of life - the only qualification required is the ability to listen: our tutors help and encourage the children and young people as they write. The Fighting Words centre in Dublin provides a bright, friendly environment where students can come and enjoy working on their creative writing projects. We work wth similar arts organisations and libraries to offer a similar experience in other locations. At Fighting Words, we believe that everyone has a story to tell. We help children and young people find their voices to tell those stories.
