About This Cause

An Síol Child and Youth Services believe that all children deserve equality in education and the opportunity to reach their full potential irrespective of their social or cultural background. An Síol Child and Youth Service provides support for young people in the Dublin 7 area. We run after school clubs that provide a safe and welcoming space for young people to do their homework and take part in activities, that build confidence in fun ways, including day trips during school holidays. We also run a study buddy program in the evenings for young people in need of one on one mentoring with school work. An Síol Child and Youth Service is run with 2 youth worker and a team of 32 volunteers. It caters for the needs of 45 young people between the ages of 10-24 who are experiencing intergenerational economic, cultural and educational disadvantage in the Dublin 7 area. It currently runs a 4 afterschool programs and 4 educational support evenings a week. The service facilitates upwards of 2000 contacts per year, where young people are supported to develop the 7 personal and social developments outcomes as define by the better outcomes, brighter futures. Due to lack of hours for staff the service cannot address issues as they arise, as all hours are currently allocated to running projects. The service has identified additional supports that would enhance the service provision there are currently no hours available to develop and implement theses programs. The provision of additional hours would enable the project to create a more rounded service that would support the development of additional young person and also current participants creating a wrap around needs that not supported by other local external agencies. At the height of the financial crisis An Síol had a it funding cut by 14,000 euro. The lead worker position was cut from 35hrs a week to 25 hours a week. There has been no restoration on this which makes it difficult to provide a rounded service with the current funding allocation. Proposed actions to increase service provision hours. The additional funding received will be used to fund an additional hour for staff and to provide a development and activities to cover running cost. With additional hours we will be able to create additional programs to support young LGBTQ+, promote cultural and beliefs inclusive service, Run STEAMS programs for young persons who are not in afterschool program, mental health awareness and support. The program will increase the capacity of the young persons, their engagement with education and technology, their confidence in relation to both formal and informal learning. This will give the young person the required foundations to identify their personal skills and how best to utilize them to make positive personal development and great contributors to the society
