About This Cause

Since 2012 and Action Ireland Trusts involvement with Ha Hlalele School in Lesotho, we have seen significant improvements in the Schools performance ,enrollments, attendance and the numbers of Learners graduating into university. The construction of new classrooms, science block, computer lab, kitchen, staff room, administration and sanitation blocks has improved access to education and created a pathway out of poverty. The Action Ireland Trust “Cradle to Career” Program incorporating our support of local cooperatives and communities, requires a focus on school staff teaching their learners Agriculture Skills, Relationship Skills, Art/Craft, Music, Sport Skills and I.T Skills as well as a more academic examination skill set. Often the emphasis in formal exam results impedes some learners, although the reality on the ground is that there are now far more learners learning life skills and realizing their full potential and aspiring to start their own business. Much of the Program “Cradle to Career” is about developing co-curricular activities that encourage entrepreneurial skills and delivers access to quality education. With financial and knowledge based mentoring activities such as beekeeping, crop production, pig farming, poultry and rabbit production was introduced to the school campus at Ha Hlalele and was supported by the local community. With your financial support the extent of improvements carried out by Action Ireland Trust at Hlalele High School included, 1. Infrastructure (Environment) : • Two classrooms • Science Laboratory • Kitchen • Borehole and installation of water tanks • Flushing Toilets • Administration block • Computers • Music equipment • Early Learning Centre was opened in February 2020 * Wash Program for learner hygiene 2. Human Resources : • Teachers training on Information Technology • Learners training on music and swimming • Teachers training in classroom management. • Teachers training in teaching and learning. • Ha Hlalele teachers training staff from their feeder 5 Primary Schools. • Ha Hlalele teachers + Primary School teachers training surrounding schools. • Electrical installation in the classrooms/ Computer Laboratory 3. Agriculture : • Irrigation system • Poly Tunnel • Beehives Honey Extractor • Protective clothes • Potato Planter. Following on from our success at Ha Hlalele, Action Ireland Trust continues to strive to lift the people of Lesotho out of poverty and give them hope of a future through education and our skills exchange program, remembering the proverb"Teach people how to fish and you feed them for a Lifetime " Our current program involves 5 schools in the capital Maseru, with over 6000 Learners and Teachers .The schools have no running water or toilet facilities ,resulting in appalling hygiene and sanitation conditions. Through our Teacher Training Program ,the schools have experienced improvements in teacher /learner communications and class management techniques ,the elimination of corporal punishment and greater academic achievements among learners ,resulting in increased numbers perusing third level education. As part of our commitment to the schools, we are funding Bore Wells for fresh water and the construction of Male, Female and Staff Toilets . Also, the construction of Kitchens and the cultivation of Market Gardens to provide fresh vegetables for learner meals. The Schools have included the management of the Market Gardens as a learning opportunity ,with surplus produce being sold in the local market to fund school equipment . Our Rain Water Harvesting project provides irrigation to the Gardens. The construction Project forms part of our Skills Exchange Program, where working in partnership with a local group ."Rise International" provides work inexperience in Architecture ,Design,Construction and a range of Management and Business Techniques for young professionals and construction workers.Through the year we communicate with all the Stakeholders and visit Lesotho to evaluate and and review progress. In collaboration with Portmarnock Community School, our construction and educational volunteers are joined for 2 weeks each year by 35/40 Transition Year Students ,who with our Volunteers fund their own expenses. Apart from the role in construction and education ,the students contribute to a cultural exchange program, broadening their horizons and those of the learners in Lesotho. Action Ireland Trust and the commitment of the Volunteers and Stakeholders drive the success of the projects. The willingness and enthusiasm of the people of Lesotho to take ownership of these initiatives and identify with the sustainable benefits for their communities encouraging us to drive the projects. Action Ireland Trust needs your enthusiasm and Funding to support this work.
