About This Cause

St John Ambulance Ireland delivered its first training courses in 1880 and established its first uniformed Division in 1903. Our current membership seeks to emulate the service of those who founded our organisation in Ireland all those years ago as part of a worldwide foundation of St. John International, with the same fervour, dedication and voluntary commitment. St John Ambulance Ireland is a registered charity with two interconnected aims; firstly to provide trained, uniformed, pre-hospital care providers to aid the sick and injured and secondly to train the general public in pre-hospital care. The organisation is volunteer-led and managed, through a rank-based management structure. Historically, a volunteer Council provided a robust governance function and this structure worked well and suited the organisation’s legal standing as a “Friendly Society”. The organisation recently decided to change this legal standing to a company limited by guarantee (CLG), in line with most Irish charities, and the work of the Council will now be taken over by a Board of Directors. The members of the new Board will also provide their services on a voluntary basis. St. John Ambulance Ireland is supported in its work by a fulltime staff complement of three.
