Mission Statement

Helping children and young adults with disabilities realise their full potential to live their best life.

About This Cause

Established in 1961, St. Gabriel's is a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation that supports children and young adults with disabilities to live their best life. We work in a spirit of partnership with families and carers to meet the individual needs of the child, helping them reach their full potential. St. Gabriel’s Foundation provides a range of essential services and education to children with disabilities and their families in the mid-west. Over 1600 children with varying levels of disability attend our services, which include St. Gabriel’s School, Hydropool, Orthotics Department, Respite House and Clinical Disability Network Teams. Our staff are committed to working with young people with disabilities and their families to minimise the impact of disability and increase the opportunities for growth, development, inclusion and overall well-being. Therapists carry out assessments, develop strategies and interventions, deliver therapy programmes and provide parent training workshops, all of which provide an integrated plan for each child based on their individual needs. Other essential services provided by St. Gabriel’s, which are also available to the wider community, are hydrotherapy and orthotics, both important forms of treatment for children and adults with disabilities. A purpose-built children’s respite house located at Mungret was opened in July 2021 to provide overnight respite to children with complex medical needs in the community. This is the first children’s respite facility of this type in the country. In addition, a school for children with special needs from age 4-18 years is on the St Gabriel’s campus. Up to 65 pupils attend school and they receive additional health related supports including nursing care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech & language therapy enabling them to be at school and enjoy an educational environment suited to their needs. Such is the need for services in the region that a second clinical Disability Network team was established in Limerick's South City. The organisation is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors of 10 members, who serve the organisation on a voluntary basis, for which they receive no remuneration. They are responsible for the organisation’s activities and strategic overview and hold monthly meetings. The CEO Treasa McAuliffe reports to the Board and oversees the day-to-day management of the organisation.
