Mission Statement
The idea of the institution comes from the need that arose from parents and educators who see closely the families who send their children to educational settings to learn and progress, and from the strait that prevails at home, the student does not have the emotional and intellectual freedom to concentrate on his studies in the setting due to lack of nutrition or proper clothing, and what's more, when he sees his friend sitting next to him on the school bench, who comes from a more established home, bringing him decent food and clothing! And to the emotional distress at the gap he encounters with his friend in the setting, is added frustration that grows day by day also with his educators, who sometimes do not understand the boy's mind and feelings. And so every such child is a project for himself on the one hand to advance in his studies and on the other hand to transform the atmosphere at home both in terms of food and clothing, and when the child smiles, the parents smile too!
About This Cause
Rav Shlomo Binet is a master Great educator whose tzedakah and educational projects have impacted thousands of families and changed the lives of countless students. What began with a menahel’s modest initiatives and incentives to his students took flight and ultimately expanded into a colossal empire of Torah, tefillah, tzedakah and chessed. Yet without a doubt, the Association’s flagship project is Mercaz Hachessed Dvei Ilai. As the longtime menahel of a cheider, Rav Binet was exposed to shocking situation of poverty and distress in the community which, in some tragic cases, led young men to abandon the fold. His grassroots efforts started small with the purchase of a new pair of shoes for a talmid who was ashamed of his torn shoes and preparing bagged lunches for students who perpetually came without food and whose hunger inhibited their academic achievement… Day by day, month by month, his activities grew and expanded until it evolved into a full-fledged operation… Dvei Ilai Chessed Center Society has always been divided between the “haves” and “have nots.” There are children born into happy, financially-secure families who receive the physical, emotional and spiritual sustenance to develop, confront their challenges and succeed; and there are children born into distressing situations of poverty, material and emotional deprivation, who repeatedly encounter failure and disappointment. In many cases, the situation repeats itself in the next generation, becoming a vicious cycle with little hope for change… Dvei Ilai Chessed Center’s mission is to end the cycle of poverty and weakness and impart to every child the material, emotional and spiritual tools he needs to succeed. A child with faded clothing, torn shoes and a rumbling stomach cannot learn, cannot develop and cannot succeed, even in a positive environment. At the Chessed Center, we ensure that every child has respectable clothing and a healthful, nourishing meal every day. We also pair him with a mentor who facilitates his academic, emotional and spiritual development. In this way, we shatter the debilitating cycle of poverty and distress, instill the child with self-confidence and the belief that he can succeed, eliminate deprivation and feelings of inadequacy, and catapult him to success! The Chessed Center is dedicated in memory of Hagaon Harav Aryeh Leib Lifschitz zt”l, author of the Aryeh Dvei Ilai, and one of the preeminent sages in 18th century Galicia. Rav Aryeh Leib Lifschitz, a son-in-law of the Yismach Moshe, was acclaimed throughout Europe for his piety, genius in both the Revealed and Hidden Torah, and ability to generate miracles and salvations for Klal Yisrael. No Child Will Go Hungry! It’s shocking, but even today, there are children who don’t know the meaning of a home-cooked meal. When a mother is ill or hospitalized, and certainly if the mother has passed away, there’s no one to cook a meal. Many families from the lowest socioeconomic stratum can’t afford to cook regular meals either, and their children frequently go to sleep hungry. Every day, Dvei Ilai’s “mommies” cook healthful, nourishing meals for over 800(!) children in the community who would otherwise never know the meaning of a home-cooked meal… The Association endeavors with maximal discretion to collect accurate information regarding families in distress from reliable sources affiliated with all congregations and sectors. To protect the privacy of the families, even the association directors are not apprised of the families’ personal details. Relevant details are relayed only to the Department Director Mrs. Bick who refers the needy families to the center closest to their home. There, they receive a daily packaged hot meal in a dignified and discreet manner that’s enough to feed the entire family generously. When necessary, the meal is delivered directly to their door. Building Worlds! Orphanage, it is terrible and horrible; it burns the heart 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. The lack, the longing, the separation - - At critical points in time, when orphanhood looms and rises, creeping like a cold snake into the young and tender heart and wreaking havoc on it - the 'Olamot' project by the 'Debi Ilai' organization is there, for the heroic widows and beloved orphans, to drive away the freezing cold and fill the heart with love and resilience! No one can replace a father; but the supporters of 'Olamot' are the closest thing. With warmth, sensitivity and supreme dedication, they accompany the orphan with good advice, educational help, reinforcement and encouragement and everything else needed... Ahead of the holidays, the rich and full packages of food and consumer goods that arrive at the doorstep, the quality clothing for all family members, as well as shopping vouchers in large amounts - ensure that the widows and orphans will also celebrate the holiday with joy and well-being. Mentoring Project Every child craves a good word, encouragement and a warm smile, and this need is only compounded when the house doesn’t function properly, parents are distracted by various worries or are emotionally or physically unavailable. A child deprived of attention and love lacks the ingredients to develop and grow properly. Dvei Ilai employs mentors who are professionally trained to assist suffering children. With devotion and compassion, they reach out to the children, serving as surrogate parents and granting them attention, emotional support and empathy that elevates their spirits and empowers them with tools and skills to surmount their challenges and realize their goals. The Association also hosts seasonal activities and programs for the children engaged in the mentorship program. Stirring kumzitzes, exhilarating trips and enriching activities lift their morale, boost their self-confidence and give them strength to carry on. At present, Dvei Ilai’s thirty mentors reach out to approximately 120 kids at risk, yet the demand is immense, and the Association is eager to expand the program to benefit hundreds of other children who eagerly awaiting this life-giving opportunity.
