Lamerhav allows these young adults, to shatter the academic, occupational and social glass ceilings and enables them to become independent and productive citizens contributing to society and acting as agents of social change.
About This Cause
At age 18, thousands of young adults from dysfunctional and emotionally or economically unsupportive homes graduate Israel’s welfare system of boarding schools, youth villages and foster families and are left to fend for themselves. Founded in 2001 by Shula and Ze'ev Mozes, Lamerhav’s mission is to create comprehensive social change through intensive, multidimensional and long-term intervention in the lives of young adults without family support. Lamerhav allows these young adults, to shatter the academic, occupational and social glass ceilings and enables them to become independent and productive citizens contributing to society and acting as agents of social change. Lamerhav provides both a unique support model based on proprietary methodology designed by Lamerhav’s team and a one-of-a-kind Center for Partnership and Applied Development that makes Lamerhav a leader in knowledge development and sharing in our field. Geography Lamerhav has three centers: Beer-Sheva (South), Hod Hasharon (Center) and Afula (North) Target Population At-risk young adults without family support (ages 21-26) that graduate Israel’s welfare system, including new migrants and lone soldiers. Lamerhav's Model & Programming Lamerhav works with each young adult in our program for eight years spanning three stages: • Stage 1 (12 months): Finishing high school/boarding framework • Stage 2 (2-3 years): Before and during military/national service • Stage 3 (3-4 years): Post military/national service & entering adulthood (studies/career) During this period, we provide emotional, physical and financial support using three tools: • Weekly tailor-made, long-term, one-on-one mentoring • Monthly group meetings of the age cohort focusing on content relevant to the group • Skills training Complimentary programming includes Lamerhav's Economic-development Tool that teaches the principles of healthy financial management to our young adults without family support and to the mentors that guide them. Impact Lamerhav serves about 500 young adults without family support. We use an advanced CRM system (Salesforce) to monitor the progress of each young adult at given cross-sections and longitudinally. This tool allows us to measure performance and conduct research and evaluation, both external and internal, on the strengths and challenges of the program. Lamerhav reviews, measures and evaluates its operations on a regular basis, with the aim of ensuring constant relevance. Recent data from our graduates show: • 100% finished army/national service and 86% continued to academic studies • 81% were full-time employees, compared to 77% of the general population • 57% show employment stability compared with 40% of those from different frameworks
