Mission Statement

Wikimedia Israel is a non-profit organization and recognized chapter of the international Wikimedia Foundation. Sharing its mission, Wikimedia Israel promotes open knowledge and education through the collection, development and distribution of content to the public free of charge. Our activities focus primarily on developing the initiatives of the Wikimedia Foundation in Israel, namely Hebrew and Arabic Wikipedia, which are dedicated to collaboratively creating and preserving shared knowledge for any purpose with easy access for all.

About This Cause

Established in 2007, Wikimedia Israel is a growing organization. Many efforts are invested in scaling-up activities and developing outreach programs. One of our main objectives is to engage people from all ages and sectors of Israeli society as contributors to Wikipedia – the world's largest online encyclopedia - and by doing so, to enrich its content through the diversity of voices, and enhance community sharing. Wikipedia editing assignments have been incorporated into the curriculum of academic courses in the Tel Aviv University, Bar Ilan University and the University of Haifa and other academic institutions. This is a means to develop students' writing skills, information literacy and research skills. At the same time, assigning Wikipedia articles as coursework is beneficial for creating high quality free content in specialized academic topics. Furthermore, we have successfully led Wikipedia editing projects in some 30 high schools throughout the country. Learning the basics of encyclopedic writing, namely formal writing, using sources, citing and document organization develops students' mastery of 21st century skills, and invites them to make a real contribution to society.
