Mission Statement
The Haifa Society for the Blind and Prevention of Blindness, founded in 1947, is the only regional organization addressing social and leisure opportunities for the blind/visually impaired in the Haifa region. The Society is a beacon of support, significantly improving the quality of life of its members, while increasing public awareness of the plight of the blind and visually impaired community. Our organization is effectively operated on a lean budget while maintaining the highest standards of management with the proven capability of impacting our community for the better.
About This Cause
Over the course of the last two years, we have grown exponentially. In the past, our daily activities concluded at 2pm four days a week. However; currently our activities run until 8pm four days a week. A number of new groups have also joined our ranks (as detailed in the following section ). As a result, the number of seminars, classes, trips, and general programming has multiplied by up to three fold. Moreover, due to the recent and ongoing Covid Pandemic, our regular financial support for the all-critical transportation expense has sustained a severe blow. In addition to the above, it is important to point out that generally speaking, those suffering from the early stages of vision loss are hesitant to reach out for help. Unlike other conditions, adjusting to vision impairment/blindness inherently necessitates reliance on the support and assistance of both people and systems in the surrounding environment. The blind and visually impaired require the resources of information and practical addresses to turn to for guidance and help through both the initial and ongoing stages of the challenging path ahead. However, without proper marketing to the public, there exists confusion as to where one can turn to for help according to his/her needs. Without the proper tools and guidance, visual impairments and blindness can greatly limit an individual's independence while detrimentally impacting the quality of one’s daily life. Losing one's ability to drive, read, enjoy a television program, or move about independently greatly lowers one’s self-esteem and social standing. Hence, it is critical that we turn to outside sources of funding in order to allow us to meet the needs of the increased demand on our programming, and to improve the quality of life for the blind and visually impaired in Haifa and the northern region of Israel.
