Mission Statement
The Distretto di Economia Solidale del Territorio di Varese (DES Va ETS) is an association that aims to experiment and consolidate solidarity forms of economy by developing a local solidarity network; by creating culture on issues related to the solidarity economy; by drawing up projects and activities to support local realities and to create systems of production, distribution, and consumption based on the principles of the solidarity economy: that is, putting the value of people and relationships, respect for human rights and legality, and protection of the environment and biodiversity before profit. DES Va's dream is for the realization of an economy of peace that promotes good living for all.
About This Cause
DES Va represents a point of reference for the territory and local communities. It is an aggregator of energies, experiences and visions, capable of acting as a driving force for solidarity economy projects in the province of Varese. For the provincial network, DES Va is a place where realities find listening, confrontation and opportunities for collaboration. Its function is twofold: on the one hand, it supports and strengthens local initiatives, enhancing their specificity and creating synergies; on the other hand, it spreads culture, promotes new models of economy and builds bridges between different social actors, also involving those who are outside the traditional circuits of the solidarity economy. In this sense, DES Va is a generative space, making possible the emergence and consolidation of sustainable, inclusive and common good-oriented practices. Over the past three years, DES Va has steadily pursued its commitment to the promotion of the solidarity economy in the Varese area, consolidating networks, launching new projects, and offering moments of reflection, participation, and training to citizenship. - September 2022 - “Synergies for the planet: building the ecological transition from below” and “Peace, energy and participatory responses: energy communities” represented two moments of discussion on the climate urgency and possible responses from below, with the involvement of experts and citizenship. - February 2023 - Afghan dinner with debate, in support of the “Stand up with Afghan Women” campaign in collaboration with CISDA and the Afghan Cultural Association of Varese. - June 2023 - Screening of the documentary Trieste is beautiful at night, dedicated to the issue of migrant rejections along the Balkan route. The event was a moment of strong civic and cultural impact, made possible by extensive networking involving more than 30 associations in the area. The evening, hosted at the Giardini Estensi in Varese, was attended by about 350 people-an exceptional result for a human rights initiative on an ordinary Tuesday evening. - April and May 2024 - Conferences on intensive livestock farming and the climate crisis (with Greenpeace Varese and B.Ar. Gas) and on peasant and sustainable agriculture, as well as the screening of the documentary Food for profit, offered new insights into the environment, rights and food. - "Connessioni di Valore" Project (2022-2024) Regenerative social agriculture project in the Ticino Park, funded by Fondazione Cariplo and implemented in partnership with eight territorial realities and the University of Milan. The goal was the redevelopment of uncultivated land, combined with the employment inclusion of people in fragile conditions. DES Va's role within the project included: - the care of institutional and territorial communication; - the strengthening of the PPDO network, both in terms of distribution of processed products and visibility and communication; - the organization of the DES Fair as the final event of the project, aimed at enhancing the experiences and strengthening the synergies between the entities involved. PPDO - Piccola Poetica Distribuzione Organizzata DES Varese designed this model for the distribution of local products. PPDO is an ethical and fair trade e-commerce active in the province of Varese, managed by the social cooperative La Ginestra of Busto Arsizio, which takes care of logistics and administration. It aims to facilitate a direct and sustainable meeting between consumers and small local production realities. With PPDO it is possible to do a weekly KM0 shopping, receiving it at home or at convenient delivery points: the pantry is thus enriched with healthy and artisanal products, made with full respect for the earth and people's work.
