Mission Statement
"Support diversity by making tourism accessible universally, empowering people with different abilities to eliminate barriers to access the sea, improving their physical and mental health, while fostering social inclusion"
About This Cause
Io Posso" (“I CAN!” in Italian) is a project of 2HE, Center for Human Health and Environment, a non-profit association. "Io Posso" was born in the memory of Gaetano Fuso, who suffered from ALS (motor neuron disease) and whose dream was to make the sea truly accessible to everybody, despite their medical or financial conditions. The staff is made of Gaetano's friends, volunteers and donors that contribute to the cause. The accessible beach locations, which operate in the summer season and are free of charge, are equipped with: - Main passageway for wheelchairs - Beach beds to accommodate minor mobility disabilities as well as major mobility disabilities (electricity and water stations under gazebos reserved for people that need ventilator support) - Beach wheelchairs - Assistance in the sea for people with severe disabilities - Bathrooms / medical emergency box Since its beginning in 2015, this project has allowed to host 4200 visitors with disabilities and their families, 10% of which are from outside of Italy. All of this was achieved with just a few spaces in 3 locations in Puglia (South of Italy), near Lecce. This organization pioneered a virtuous accessible tourism model that inspired many other organizations across Italy, like in Emilia Romagna, Sardinia and Basilicata regions, that replicated the same model. In order for "Io Posso" to grow and help more people across the world, we need support from donors and volunteers. Join us to make accessibility in tourism an option for everybody, helping us change the world little by little.
