Mission Statement

Special Olympics (SO) is the international sports organization which provides opportunities to play sports and actively involves the community for intellectual disabilities. SO is targeting to create society which all individuals are welcomed (accepted) as they are. And SO positions all who joins sports activities with intellectual disabilities as Athletes. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports with intellectual disabilities, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families and the community. SO was introduced to Japan in 1980 and in 1994 Special Olympics Nippon (SON) was organized and approved by SO International HQ. Currently 170 countries, 4 million Athletes and 1 million volunteers join the activities. (as at end of June 2012)

About This Cause

[What do we provide] ・Daily Training SON (SO Nippon) supports it through out the year.Athletes are able to participate once a week / 8weeks training program at their suitable level of activities at prefectural units. In Japan, SO Nippon provides 15 different types of summer sports training such as Track and fields and Swimming and 7 different types of winter sports training such as Alpine sky and Speed skating. ・Competitions where Athletes shows accomplishments - Local to World Olympics SO organizes competitions where Athletes can present the results of their daily training programs. Special Olympics World Games take place every two years and alternate between Summer and Winter Games. In addition to World Olympics, SON holds some more games such as National games and local sports competitions and so on. Many Athletes in SON prefectural units take part in them. ・Challenge to expand new talents and potentials – Provide opportunities out side of Sports activities. SO is continuously challenging to assist Athletes in many ways. For example, we provide “Healthy Athlete Program (HAP)” to enhance their abilities as athletes and strengthen their health and “Athlete Leadership Program (ALPs)” to promote their motivation for self-sufficiency. SON works with schools to introduce SO activities to younger generation to deepen their understanding on intellectual disabilities. [How to participate] You can join the Special Olympics as: ・Athletes Any SO Athletes above 6 years of age can participate the training. ・Families: Families of SO Athletes are important supporter of SO activities. Why do not you step forward to join Athletes to play sports and challenge new things with them and you will be surprised by their growth! ・Coaches: Many coaches are actively involved in sports training programs. SO provides training programs to be coaches. Please join us even you are not specialist. ・Volunteers SO consists of Athletes, families and volunteers all together. You can share your talents for Coaching, Public Relations, Office works, Cheering etc at your available time. Supporters – Corporate, Individuals, Associates SO is non-profitable organization which is supported by donations. SO welcomes any support such as funds and goods donations, use of facilities without charges etc.
