Beginning in the Tokyo area, we have delivered a lesson to the whole country of high school. Besides, our another activity "collaborative School" is the after school to operate in Iwate Pref. Otsuchi and Miyagi Pref. Onagawa where greater damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Beyond the boundaries of schools and cram school, these are the care of the children's learning guidance and mind in the affected area.
About This Cause
Our 4 activities Katariba Katariba trains and dispatches teams of youth, mostly university students, to high schools and facilitate workshops on career development. This aims to motivate high school students through what has been coined as the “Diagonal relations”, or an intangible feeling of mutual trust, admiration and respect. This methodology means that Katariba youth teams are able to inspire high school students, by being their friend, while simultaneously being a mentor. This program is designed to stimulate high schoolers into looking out of ‘the box’ of their daily lives, and to prompt them to think bigger. Based on the over fifteen years of experience in creating such learning opportunities for youth in Tokyo and surrounding areas, Katariba is now being heralded as one of the major players in the field of career development education in Japan. Collaborative school Right after the catastrophic Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, Katariba started a needs analysis for the recovery of educational damage in the affected area. Kataribai and other members actually lived in the evacuation center for several months to find out the real on-the-ground situation and scope of needs. The needs analysis concluded that a mid-term, systematic intervention to restore their education infrastructure by maximizing local human resources is the main priority, rather than an ad-hoc approach to assistance which heavily depends on volunteers from outside the community. The “Collaborative School” was thus born under a partnership between Katariba, local school authorities including the respective Municipal Boards of Education, as well as teachers from supplementary education programs who had lost their jobs due to the disaster, and supporters both from within Japan and overseas, including corporations and foundations. Two “night schools” have been in operation in the tsunami-affected towns of Onagawa, Miyagi since July 2011 and Otsuchi, Iwate since December 2011. In addition to the lectures and tutorials to improve the academic performance of children, the program aims to provide career education and creative activities. b-lab "b-lab" (as in Bunkyo ward laboratory) is established for the junior and senior high school students in Bunkyo-ku on April 1, 15. NPO Katariba thought how we could prepare the palace to stay such as the collaborative school to run after school into other areas either, and got cooperation with Bunkyo, Tokyo. We opened b-lab as the facilities which could challenge various things for junior and senior high school students . In the b-lab, we are fully equipped with a music studio, a basketball court, table tennis ground, and the multipurpose space that students can spend like living.
