Mission Statement
Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP)'s mission is to empower pastoralists and their institutions to engage in their development action to achieve the desired development. STP is committed to supporting pastoralist communities by strengthening their ability to shape and manage their development. We believe that meaningful change must come from within the community, and we work closely with local people and their institutions to make that vision a reality. Our work is centered around six key areas: 1. Human Rights: We believe that every pastoralist deserves to live with dignity and without fear. STP promotes justice and protection for all, ensuring that the rights of pastoralist communities are recognized, respected, and upheld. 2. Peace and Social Cohesion: Many pastoralist regions experience conflict, often due to competition over resources. We work to build peace by encouraging dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among communities. Our efforts help reduce tensions and promote long-term stability. 3. Access to Water: Water is a basic human need and vital for both people and livestock. We help communities secure reliable and fair access to water by supporting the development of sustainable sources and improving water management systems. 4. Healthcare: Good health is essential for a strong and productive community. STP works to improve access to quality healthcare services, raise awareness about health issues, and support initiatives that enhance physical and mental well-being. 5. Food Security and Livelihoods: We support communities to increase food production, diversify their sources of income, and adapt to changing environments. Our work helps pastoralists become more resilient to drought, climate change, and market challenges, ensuring they can feed their families and sustain their way of life. 6. Environmental Conservation: Pastoralists depend on natural resources for their survival. STP promotes environmental stewardship through sustainable land use, protection of biodiversity, and climate-smart practices. We encourage communities to manage their environment in ways that ensure it remains productive for generations to come. Our approach is holistic, meaning we understand that these areas are deeply connected. For example, access to water affects food security, which in turn influences health and peace. By addressing these issues together, we aim for solutions that are both effective and long-lasting. We are proud to work with communities, not just for them. We respect the unique cultures, traditions, and knowledge systems of pastoralists, and we involve them fully in the planning and implementation of all initiatives. This approach builds local ownership, which we believe is key to achieving lasting impact. Ultimately, STP exists to empower pastoralists to lead their development. Our goal is to help them create strong, self-reliant communities that are healthy, peaceful, and resilient, with a sustainable future firmly in their hands.
About This Cause
Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP) – Empowering Resilient Communities for Sustainable Development In the expansive arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya, where life is shaped by the changing seasons and the movement of livestock, pastoralist communities face complex and evolving challenges. These include water scarcity, food insecurity, health risks, environmental degradation, and social conflicts. Despite their rich cultural heritage and deep-rooted knowledge of land and livestock management, pastoralist communities have often been underserved and excluded from mainstream development efforts. Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP) is a grassroots nonprofit organization committed to changing that. STP exists to empower pastoralist communities, especially women, youth, and indigenous institutions, so they can lead their development, protect their rights, and secure a better future. Our goal is not just to provide assistance but to enable long-term, community-led solutions that address the root causes of vulnerability and marginalization. ________________________________________ Our Vision To have resilient and organic pastoralist institutions that sustainably foster their holistic socioeconomic transformation. Our Mission To empower pastoralists and their institutions to engage in their development action to achieve desired development. ________________________________________ What We Do STP takes a holistic and inclusive approach to community development, recognizing that the challenges pastoralists face are interconnected and require integrated solutions. Our programs focus on six critical pillars: 1. Human Rights and Social Justice • Advocacy for the rights of pastoralist communities on land ownership, use, and protection. • Promoting legal literacy and awareness of constitutional rights. • Training community leaders on governance, civic engagement, and social inclusion. 2. Peacebuilding and Social Cohesion • Facilitating community dialogue and mediation forums. • Engaging youth and elders in peacebuilding. • Supporting traditional conflict resolution methods. 3. Water Access and Resource Management • Construction and rehabilitation of water points, boreholes, shallow wells, and water pans. • Promoting equitable water governance. • Training in sustainable water management and climate adaptation. 4. Healthcare and Community Well-being • Lobbying the government for rural health services. • Advocating for mobile health camps in Turkana. • Promoting hygiene, mental health, and disease prevention. 5. Food Security and Livelihood Diversification • Promoting climate-smart agriculture and livestock practices. • Supporting women and youth in alternative income-generating activities. • Providing training in entrepreneurship and value chain development. 6. Environmental Conservation and Climate Resilience • Promoting sustainable grazing and land use. • Engaging in reforestation, soil conservation, and biodiversity protection. • Raising awareness on climate change impacts and adaptation. ________________________________________ Our Approach STP’s work is grounded in local knowledge, community participation, and respect for cultural traditions. We believe development must be community-led and inclusive. Our approach includes: • Strengthening community-based organizations, elders, youth, and women’s networks. • Co-creating projects with communities from design to evaluation. • Focusing on sustainability and self-reliance. • Ensuring accountability and transparency in all operations. ________________________________________ Who We Serve STP works with diverse pastoralist communities in Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Kajiado, and Elgeyo Marakwet. STP has currently started in Turkana County and will later expand to these other pastoralist regions in Kenya. Our focus includes women, children, youth, elders, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. ________________________________________ Our Impact: Community-Led Action in Turkana County Through the Lokitela Etuko Pastoralists Association (LEPA), STP has: • Facilitated over ten sensitization and mobilization meetings. • Helped form ten community committees with seasonal grazing plans. • Enabled communities to elect leadership and protect grazing lands. • Engaged with the Turkana County Government on land protection and responsible development. The committees rejected the use of grazing land for industrial projects but allocated nearby land, preserving the core resource. ________________________________________ Advocacy in Health and Water Access STP has successfully influenced the government to: • Drill boreholes and construct dispensaries in rural Turkana. Challenges remain in staffing and medicine availability, and we continue advocating for increased health investments. ________________________________________ Environmental Protection: Lake Ecosystem and Biodiversity Conservation We work with 40 Beach Management Units (BMUs) to: • Raise awareness on Lake Ecosystem management. • Promote sustainable fishing practices. • Preserve and restore Lake Biodiversity for long-term ecological balance and livelihoods. ________________________________________ Why Your Support Matters Every contribution helps us: • Train communities and build capacity. • Mobilize grassroots action. • Improve essential infrastructure. • Advocate for lasting services. • Protect the environment and biodiversity. ________________________________________ Looking Ahead We are seeking partners to: • Scale rangeland management across regions. • Expand healthcare access. • Strengthen climate resilience. • Deepen lake conservation initiatives. • Support pastoralists to engage in meaningful diversified livelihood initiatives • Build more effective advocacy on governance and human rights initiatives. • Create potable water infrastructures. ________________________________________ Join Us Your support can transform lives.
