Mission Statement
Baraka Women center mission is to provide a safe place for disadvantaged women and youth to access the training, mentoring and support the need to create prosperous lives for themselves and their families. it is a place dedicated to solving common problems and building strength in unity.
About This Cause
Baraka Women’s Center (BWC) was founded in 2012 through the sponsorship of Women’s Centers International. Its mission is to provide a safe environment where women living in poverty can access training, support, and capital to build healthier and more prosperous lives. BWC is a Kenya-registered Community-Based Organization (CBO) and got the registration in 2014. BWC in Nairobi / Kiambu has a staff of five and twelve trainers for vocational programs and Rumuruti two and Eight Trainers. The Center has registered over 3000 members; approximately 80% of them regularly active in the Center’s activities. Members range in age from 16 to 70 years and include many single mothers. Most are undereducated, under- or unemployed, and reside in slums throughout Nairobi , Kiambu and Laikipia County . A vibrant community of women, young mothers and youths have grown and become empowered at BWC Centers. Members have achieved many successes over two years of focused work . The continuing influx of women , young mothers and youths seeking to join programs means the centers have outgrown its current location. The vision for a new location includes office and classroom space as well as shops for members business The Center’s core programs include Vocational which include hair dressing/beauty therapy , Tailoring/ dress making , Computer , and Bead work . To make them good entrepreneurs the members are trained in Entrepreneurship /Transformative leadership Skills Training, Table Banking Groups, Adult Learning (Literacy). Other trainings includes Health Education, and awareness workshops with counseling for survivors of domestic and sexual violence / Stress management .All workshops and courses are free of charge with snacks and tea provided to participants, many of whom depend on this food allowance. The Center’s “one-stop ” approach means integrated resources are delivered based on the interrelated needs each woman presents. She becomes a member of a sisterhood in the complex process of restoring her self-esteem and a sense of hope, the basis for transforming her life. Baraka Center engages many local partners to help build women’s economic strength and health awareness. These alliances deliver access to loans, financial education, and a variety of health-related information and services. The Centers welcomes an average of 1,500 members and visitors each month for training, counseling, and mentoring. It has also developed a business enterprise that employs graduates from its training courses. The center also has a mentorship program for all the trainees and also monitoring/evaluation of their business
