BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Shelter Children’s Home, also known as Simba Village, was founded in 1997 with the aim of providing care and support to vulnerable children in the outskirts of Nairobi, near the Ngong Hills in the Maasai area of Kibiko in Kajiado West Sub- County. Shelter Children’s Home is officially registered as a Children’s home by the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, Senior Citizen Affairs, and Special Programs.The home accommodates 153 both boys and girls from age 2years to 18yrs. Over the years, Shelter Children’s Home has achieved significant milestones and made a positive impact on the lives of many children and the surrounding Maasai community. MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS: The following are some of the major accomplishments of Shelter children’s home: i. Providing Care and Support: Since its inception, Shelter Children’s Home has accommodated and supported over 350 children who were orphans, destitute, abandoned, abused, and girls rescued from early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). ii. Education Support: The Home has played a vital role in educating the children it cares for. To date, SCH have educated 53 children in secondary schools, 77 in primary schools, and 23 in colleges and universities. iii. Advocacy and Community Sensitization: Shelter Children’s Rehabilitation Centre actively advocates for the rights of children in the community. We also conduct awareness campaigns to sensitize the community about the importance of education for every child. iv. Family Reintegration: Shelter Children’s Rehabilitation Centre works to reintegrate children back into their families or look for Alternative Care Placement through family visits, ensuring their well-being and stability. v. Rescuing vulnerable Girls: Shelter Children’s Rehabilitation Centre has rescued over 20 girls from early marriages and FGM, providing them with a safe environment and the opportunity to pursue education and a better future. vi. Community Empowerment: Shelter Children’s Home has taken steps towards empowering the surrounding community. It has created job opportunities for the locals and provided them with access to clean water for both home and livestock consumption. vii. Child Exit Program Success: Shelter Children’s Home exit program has been successful in lobbying for job opportunities and full re- integration for boys and girls who have completed the program. We have also connected high school leavers the National Youth Service (NYS) for self- reliance. viii. Life Skills Empowerment: Shelter Children’s Home empowers children with essential life skills, both within the institution and at the community level, preparing them for a more independent and productive future. Overall, the Shelter Children’s Home has made significant contributions to the well-being and development of vulnerable children, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment, education, and essential life skills. Additionally, Shelter Children’s Home efforts in community empowerment have positively impacted the lives of those living in the surrounding area, creating a ripple effect of positive development. MAIN OBJECTIVES The main objectives of Shelter Children’s Rehabilitation Centre are: i. Providing basic needs such as shelter, food, clothing, and education to the destitute and needy abandoned children: The center aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children who have been abandoned or are in need, ensuring they have access to essential necessities such as food, clothing, and education. ii. Helping children gain self-confidence through learning life skills in order to succeed: The center focuses on empowering children by teaching them important life skills that can help them build self-confidence and succeed in various aspects of life. iii. Offering basic needs such as food, shelter, education, clothing, healthcare, and counseling in a homely environment: The center provides a holistic approach to care, ensuring that children not only receive their basic needs but also have access to healthcare and counseling services in a homely and supportive environment. iv. Empowering the surrounding community through training on farming skills, product development, marketing skills, and good parenting skills: The center is committed to empowering the surrounding community by providing training and education on various skills such as farming, product development, marketing, and good parenting. By doing so, they aim to uplift the community and create a more sustainable support system for the children. v. Eventually re-integrating children with responsible and financially secure relatives and foster homes: The ultimate goal of the center is to reintegrate the children into stable and supportive environments with responsible and financially secure relatives or foster homes. This helps ensure that the children can continue to thrive and receive the necessary care even after leaving the center. These objectives highlight the center's dedication to providing comprehensive care, support, and empowerment to vulnerable children while also aiming to uplift the broader community. OUR MAJOR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Shelter Children’s home strives to create a nurturing environment for vulnerable children to grow, develop, and realize their full potential while advocating for their rights and protection. Shelter's major programs and services revolve around providing quality 1) Education, 2) Comprehensive childcare, 3) Successful re- integration, and 4) Community empowerment to fulfill their core mandate of creating wholesome citizens and promoting children's rights and well-being. We offer the following programs and services: Education Program: The Education Program is designed to provide children with quality education and life skills, ensuring they receive the necessary academic foundation and personal development opportunities to become well-rounded individuals. This program includes the following components: a. Pre-School (Early Childhood Education): Shelter offers early childhood education services to young children, providing them with a supportive and stimulating environment to foster their cognitive, social, and emotional development. b. Primary School: Children in the primary school age group receive formal education Based on CBC education system in Kenya. Shelter aims to equip them with fundamental academic knowledge and essential life skills. c. Secondary School: Shelter provides educational support to our adolescent boys and girls for their secondary education through scholarships funded by our generous sponsors and well-wishers. This assistance not only prepares them for higher academic pursuits but also empowers them to face future challenges with confidence. d. Tertiary Education (University and Tivet Level): To ensure that children have equal opportunities to pursue their academic aspirations, Shelter offers assistance for tertiary education. This includes support for university studies and middle-level colleges, helping boys and girls achieve their ultimate career goals. 2.5.2 Childcare Program: The Childcare Program focuses on ensuring the overall well-being and health of the children under Shelter's care. Most of the children brought to the centre are usually undernourished and traumatized. Our program encompasses a range of essential services to meet the children's physical, emotional, and psychological needs. These services include the following; e. Feeding: Shelter provides balanced and nutritious meals to ensure that the children receive adequate nourishment for their growth and development. We strive to ensure that most of the vegetables and milk are produced in our farm for sustainability of nutritious foods. f. Health Care: we collaborate with the Kajiado County health services to ensure that our children receive access to healthcare services, including regular medical check-ups, vaccinations, and treatment . g. Child-centered, Counseling: To address emotional and psychological challenges, Shelter offers Child-Centered counseling services to our children, providing a safe and confidential environment for children to express themselves h. Accommodation: Children without stable homes are provided with safe and comfortable living spaces within Shelter children home. i. Recreation: Shelter organizes recreational activities and programs to promote physical fitness, social interaction, and overall well-being among the children. Reintegration Program: The Reintegration Program aims to reunite children with their families and society whenever possible. The program involves a series of activities to ensure a smooth transition and successful reintegration. The re-integration program includes a. Family Tracing: Shelter actively seeks out and locates the families or guardians of children to initiate the reintegration process. b. Home Visits: Social workers from Shelter conduct home visits to assess the suitability and safety of the child's family environment. c. Follow-up and Assessment: After reintegration, Shelter continues to monitor the child's progress, providing support and assistance as needed. We conduct regular check-ins with the child and their family to assess their adjustment to the new environment and to identify any challenges or concerns that may arise in the integration process. d. Capacity Building: Shelter may collaborate with other relevant agencies and organizations to access additional support services for the child and their family, such as medical care, legal aid, or social assistance Community Empowerment Programs: Shelter recognizes the importance of empowering communities to foster self-reliance. Through various community empowerment programs, Shelter collaborates with local communities to enhance their capacities and promote sustainable development: The home is looking for partners to help expand its funding to enable save more children and give them a bright future.
