OUR STORY Irene Kasandi- Founder Kibera Pride Initiative (KPI) was born out of one woman’s journey from hardship to hope. Irene Kasandi, our founder, grew up in the sprawling Kibera slums, one of Africa’s largest informal settlements. As a child, she faced the harsh realities of poverty lack of basic needs, limited access to education, and the daily struggle for survival. Despite these challenges, Irene remained resilient and determined to change her future. Her life took a positive turn when she received support from the Missionaries of Charity brothers founded by St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the AVSI Foundation, and a close friend named Irene, who all contributed to her education. With their help, she pursued her studies and eventually became a social worker and welfare specialist. This support not only gave her the opportunity to pursue her dreams but also ignited a passion within her to give back to her community. Irene knew firsthand what it meant to feel hopeless yet be given a chance, and this became her driving force to make a difference for other vulnerable children in Kibera.
