Mission Statement
To empower and protect vulnerable children and their communities, so that these children can lead a bright future
About This Cause
Macheo was started in 2005 when Marnix Huis in ‘t Veld and Maureen Kromowirjo arrived in Kenya from the Netherlands and the lottery of life stared them right in the face. They could not walk away from the injustices and lack of opportunities for the children they met. Since then Macheo has continued to grow till today. We now serve over 20,000 children per year. We do this important work with 130 incredibly committed colleagues who know local circumstances and what works best. We work closely together with other partners, most importantly the Government of Kenya. Healthy child development is multi-dimensional. We believe our solutions should be as well. That is why we apply a holistic approach. We feel the moral obligation to be as effective as possible. To us this means helping as many as possible with maximum impact. Multi-dimensional means we look at 7 aspects of a child’s development: care, protection, education & skills, health, food & nutrition, shelter and psycho-social wellbeing. To apply an individualized holistic approach means we need networks with partners and a well-equipped toolbox of different interventions we apply ourselves. These interventions are: child protection, alternative family care, temporary residential care, individual school support, access to healthcare, economic strengthening of families, combat malnourishment, counselling, teen mothers, infrastructure and school feeding. Our mission is to empower and protect vulnerable children and their communities, so that these children can lead a bright future. We do this with and for children and communities around Thika, Kenya. Macheo Children’s Organization is fully compliant and registered as a non-governmental organization in Kenya, as a ANBI stichting Macheo Nederland in the Netherlands and as a 501(c)3 organization Macheo US in the USA.
