Mission Statement
The Mental Health Foundation (MHF) is a charity that works towards creating a society free from discrimination, where all people enjoy positive mental health and wellbeing.
About This Cause
Each year 1 in 5 Kiwis experience a mental health problem. It is our wish that no one has to face this on their own. The Mental Health Foundation covers the A-Z of mental health information and support, taking a holistic approach and promoting what we know makes and keeps people mentally well. We inform, influence and advocate for positive health and wellbeing through policy, advice and research. Our Information Service provides free support and resources for anyone who is going through a difficult time, or for people who are supporting someone who they love and care about. We also provide free wellbeing resources. Key activities • Our Resource and Information Service is New Zealand’s most trusted place for information on mental health. We provide a free, nationwide service supporting New Zealanders to navigate the complex mental health system and connect them to their local services. Our library contains a wealth of resources covering topics including depression, reducing mental illness discrimination, suicide prevention, how to support whānau and friends experiencing distress, older people’s mental health and more. • Suicide Prevention initiatives. We provide information and up-to-date resources to support those worried about suicide risks either to themselves or someone close to them. We also provide suicide bereavement support and information after a suicide death, including how to set up and run support groups for suicide loss. • We promote the Five Ways to Wellbeing (Connect, Give, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Be Active) to improve the overall mental health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders. • We created Pause, Breathe, Smile, a mindfulness programme for schools which has demonstrated that mindfulness can increase children’s calmness, improve focus and attention, enhance self-awareness and help young people to develop positive relationships. • The Common Ground website, phone line, text counselling and information service helps parents, families, whānau and friends support young people to manage hard times and enjoy happier lives. • Mental Health Awareness Week is a themed national campaign held each October and endorsed by the World Federation for Mental Health. The MHF contributes information and resources to participating organisations throughout New Zealand. • We lead Pink Shirt Day, a worldwide anti-bullying campaign which helps create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected. • We work alongside the media to run balanced stories about those with experience of mental illness and avoid sensational headlines, supporting them to report on suicide safely and responsibly. • Working Well. A programme to help businesses and organisations obtain optimal mental health for their most valuable asset – their people. • We work with the national Like Minds, Like Mine campaign telling people’s stories, working with families, service providers and employers to help reduce stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.
