Our mission is to improve the quality of life of communities by empowering the citizens with the right knowledge and skills to take responsibility for their well-being.

About This Cause

Citizens’ Health Education and Development Initiative (CHEDI) is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 and legally registered in Nigeria with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number CAC/IT/NO55445 in 2012 with a goal to contribute to building a healthy and productive nation by engaging in advocacy, capacity building and empowerment of the citizenry, especially for vulnerable and marginalized groups in Nigeria. CHEDI was established as a reaction to observations made bordering on inadequate information on preventive healthcare, especially of communicable diseases like (Malaria, HIV, and Tuberculosis) and non-communicable diseases such as (cancer, hypertension, diabetes, malnutrition) and other, most at-risk populations, youths, and vulnerable citizens in Nigeria. We are committed to increasing access to healthy living for the citizenry through advocacy/sensitization, capacity building, and partnerships/collaboration VISION: CHEDI envisions a Nigeria where the health and well-being of citizens are advanced through Education and Awareness thereby achieving a healthy and productive workforce. TARGET BENEFICIARIES Women Youths Poor and Vulnerable ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: BOARD MEMBERS: CHEDI is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of eminent Nigerians from various works of life. Management: The daily activity of CHEDI is run by a team of committed staff. The Executive Director is the overall supervisor. She is a well-experienced RN with a master's degree in Public Health. Staff strength: Currently, the Center has six full-time staff. Volunteer: The organization has 10 volunteers. Opportunity is given to one Corp member and one Industrial Training student to serve with the organization annually. State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imo State Federal Ministry of Health Federal Capital Territory OUR STATE OFFICES Imo State Nasarawa State Niger State Abia State CHEDI ABRIDGED SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED PROGRAMS, SOME SUCCESS STORIES/ONGOING PROGRAMS: With ACOMIN, CHEDI is currently implementing the second Phase of Global Fund a 3-year Program on Community Led Monitoring of Malaria Prevention in Suleja, Niger State. The 1st 3-year Global Fund Malaria Program was implemented in Lapai Niger State (2019-2021). From World Bank Staff FY2022, we implemented a program “Reducing Poverty Among 100 Vulnerable Women and Girls from FCT and Nasarawa State through Economic Empowerment" we distributed 100 Petrol Operated Grinding Machines, accessories, earmuffs, and start-up funds. Happy to say that some of the women/girls are already making a living out of the grinding machines. . From World Bank Staff, FY2021 we implemented the program "Economic Empowerment of 60 Indigent women from six area councils of Abuja, FCT" Here we empowered 60 women with Petrol-operated Grinding Machines, their accessories, earmuffs, and start-up funds. Some beneficiaries are now able to send their children back to school. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we volunteered with NCDC in Training-the trainers of Health Workers and allied staff on Covid-19 Prevention Protocols in Kano and Kwara States. This reduced the spread of Covid-19. AHF provided nutrition support (Palliative) to 400 vulnerable households who are mainly women-headed homes and widows in 2020 in Mbaise and Mbieri Imo State. This gesture sustained the household for more than 3 months. . From Apple, Bill and Belina Gates Foundation, and World Bank Staff, FY2020 we carried out reconstruction/renovation of a dilapidated almost abandoned PHC in Kuchiko Bwari, Abuja FCT. Today it is one of the most patronized PHCs in the Area Council. . From World Bank Staff, FY2018 and FY2019 we carried out Skills Acquisition/empowerment for Women/Youths on beading making, liquid soup, disinfectants, body/hair creams, and hair shampoo. Some of these women are now resource persons to other NGOs and CHEDI. We carried out HIV Testing Services, Nutrition Education, and Food Demonstrations in our target communities. Mothers learned about the food values of their local cheap foodstuffs for the benefit of their families. For FY2019 we also provided Hospital Equipment (i.e., patient admission beds with mattresses, pillows, bed sheets, examination couches, filing cabinets, medicine and wound dressing trolleys, and installed solar for 4 remotest PHCs in FCT and two in Nasarawa State. This boosted the morale of staff and increased patronage of the PHCs. . In 2019, CHEDI collaborated with WHO and CS-SUNN, Abuja Chapter in celebrating Maternal Newborn Week. Here, we sensitized women in Gwagwa Districts Abuja, FCT on the importance of antenatal care, pre and postnatal immunization the benefits of hospital deliveries, and the routine immunization of their babies/children after which more women had hospital deliveries and brought their children for immunizations in 2019, we collaborated with FCT Health Management Board and WHO, to monitor Measles Immunization in 4 Districts in AMAC, Abuja FCT. In 2018/2019 we collaborated with IHVN, USAID, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and NACA to carry out the National AIDS Impact Indicator Survey (NAIIS). This is now a reference point for all HIV programs. We partner with Vitamin Angeles for the distribution of Multivitamins to Pregnant/Nursing Mothers and deworming of children 6-9 months Vitamin A Supplementation for children 6-59 months in Aboh Mbaise, LGA Imo State. . With ACOMIN, 2015-2017 we carried out Social Mobilization activities on Malaria New Funding Model through Interpersonal Conductors (IPC) Global Fund program in Nigeria at Aboh Mbaise Imo State. . In 2016-2017 we constructed and equipped a 15-bed PHC, powered by solar, and we sunk a hand pump-operated borehole in Shere Koko Bwari Area Council, FCT funded by the Japanese Embassy in Nigeria. Prior to this, the nearest healthcare facility was 11 kilometers away. Many women and children lost their lives especially pregnant women during childbirth fortunately, this changed the narrative. This earned CHEDI an award of excellence in 2019 from the Japanese Embassy. . From AHF, Los Angeles USA, in 2016-2017, we implemented a program ‘Strengthen HIV Prevention and Support Amongst Female Sex Workers in Mpape and its environs in Bwari Abuja and Karu AMAC, FCT, Maska in Nasarawa State respectively. Aside from condom distribution, we carried out Skill Acquisition/Empowerment for (FSWs) on beads, liquid soap, body and hair creams, hair shampoo, and disinfectant making. Today some of those FSWs left sex work to practice the skills learned from CHEDI. Some got married and are now proud mothers. . In 2014, we carried out research with grants from IVAC John Hopkins University Baltimore, the USA on an Impact Assessment carried out on WDC 3 Local Government selected from 3 Senatorial Zones of Niger State to access the impact of the Ward Development Project set up by the State Government and IVAC John Hopkins University Baltimore, USA. In 2015, we also collaborated with IVAC on Transcription Report on Data Monitoring Intervention on Performance and Accountability in Nigeria’s Routine Immunization Program in 5 LGAs in Niger State. . We collaborated with E&FMC in 2013 for the provision of tuition fees for 220 vulnerable children. Distribution of 133 scholastic materials (school bags, shoes). This increased school attendance and retention for that year. . In 2013 we collaborated with E & FMC/ SFH/Sweet Mother Int’l for mobilization and sensitization of 3 communities of Mararaba in Karu Nasarawa State on HIV, 800 men, women, and youths were tested for HIV, and 1,000 condoms were distributed. 500 Reproductive Health kits were also distributed to PHCs. In 2012, we partnered with 7UP Bottling Company and Dufil Prima Food to sponsor a 2-day Sensitization Workshop on Sexual Violence, Gender Based Violence, Teenage Pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS for Secondary school Students in FCT, Abuja. 250 students, 50 parents, 70 teachers, and 15 media personnel were reached. . In 2012-2013 we collaborated with FMoH Malaria Control Office for Mobilization and Sensitization of Malaria Prevention and control targeting antenatal and breastfeeding mothers, Traditional Birth Attendants in Oboama, Mbaise Imo State, and Byahzin. 500 ITNs were distributed. In 2012 we collaborated with FCT PHCB in Community mobilization/sensitization for awareness creation on screening for Diabetes and Hypertension.
