Mission Statement
Giraffe Culture is a volunteer -driven organization, which offers arts and cultural facilities for people with developmental disabilities. We have members from 7-60 years old. We are a non- profit organization and all funds go directly to our members. We have skilled instructors and educators who maintain high standards both on the artistic work, as well as the social welfare aspect. It is important for us to focus at the human being, not the handicap it self. In our groups there is a lot of love, life and happiness. It is important for us to take them all seriously, and to see each one of them for the artist they truly are. To provide a sense of empowerment through artist in a community as equals.
About This Cause
Our organization is organized as follows. We have a volunteering board consisting of people from different backgrounds. Here we have youth workers , cultural workers , nurses, managers, occupational therapists , and representatives from parent group. We have a general manager, who works closely with the Board. The CEO has the responsibility to promote our projects, reach out to members, ensuring that all groups conduct their activities on line with the budget and by our human values. Each group is led by one or more teachers with arts background, and it is always assistants there who have the ultimate responsibility if it ever needed medical attention and support in social contexts. It is important that these people work well together in order to facilitate best possible for our participants. Our participants all have different backgrounds and different handicaps. We have people with autism, Down Syndrome, hearing impairment, blindness, wheelchair users, CP, and other various syndromes and disabilities. We have pr 2024; 8 theater groups covering age group 7-60 years,2 choirs, 2 bands, an artgroup, cinema once a month, dance groups, art activities and various projects that promote social skills. We also offer work for people with cognitive disabilities, and education for grown ups. In totall we have 125 regularly participants through a week, and through our external activities we meet another 275 participant throughout a month. We seek funds with different endowments and scholarships, but since we are not government-backed much is driven voluntary. Every year we have a festival where all our groups participate. The festival is called Sjiraffen Festival - "Giraffe Festival". Every other year we invited other art groups from Norway and abroad. To achieve our goals, and keep up the activities through the year, as well as maintaining the festival, this we rely on sponsors. These are important projects that are very meaningful to our participants. This also means a lot for the audience, who get a different view of the handicapped and their possibilities. It is important for us to convey to the world that we too can be actors, musicians and artists!
