Mission Statement
forever. No one should be deprived of a surgical intervention and health centers should be prepared to safely care for patients in all corners of the country. Our 5-year plan aims to meet at national level with health support both in terms of donating equipment as well as extending training of medical personnel through workshops and conferences. The objective is to make sure children born with cleft and palate will be attended in a professional way when in Lima or outside big cities in Perú.
About This Cause
Operación Sonrisa Peru is a non-profit medical association whose main objective is to operate on children, youth and adults born with cleft lip and palate. In the world Operation Smile International has completed 40 years of existence in 2022, 40 years of existence. 40 associations around the world are constantly serving communities. We have been in Peru since 1999 and thanks to the support of professionals in various specialties that make up our team of volunteers, which give their time and expertise in an altruistic way, we have managed to perform 6420 surgical interventions on patients with this condition. It is important to emphasize that each patient needs from 3 to 7 surgeries in their life to be fully discharged. From the moment the patient approaches us and registers in the association's database, we provide each patient in our comprehensive care center with a holistic support in specialties such as speech therapy, nutrition, pediatrics, dental and psychology. After undergoing surgery, each patient must begin a long treatment that includes speach therapies, usually several sessions and sometimes for many years. If this treatment is not followed with the frequency that it deserves, the patient will not be able to speak correctly. An important factor to consider is that patients with this condition suffer from anemia and malnutrition since food and nutrients escape through their nose and ears. The condition of the small hole in the palate is called a cleft palate and remains that way until the intervention. Before this operation, which is usually the second surgery for patients born with cleft palate, in some cases they become deaf due to infections that are common. Our nutrition consultations serve patients from the provinces virtually. It is necessary to provide patients with psychological support, they usually face bullying at school and discrimination when they search for a job, that lowers their self-esteem. Dental also plays an extremely important role since the malformation of the mouth can cause teeth to rise in places where they must be removed, it is vital that the dental set of teeth develops coherently and normally. Operation Smile Perú works with a system that helps babies preparing for their first surgery at 6 months of age and that with this short treatment allows the intervention to be carried out more successfully.
