About This Cause

Let's change the overwhelming statistics of suicide in Poland. HELP! In the face of the challenges and changes that affect our society, we remain committed to the mission of supporting people in need of psychological support. For us, mental health is not just a medical issue, but a fundamental aspect of our overall well-being. Mental health is an important part of our lives, affecting our daily functioning, relationships with others and our ability to achieve our goals. However, mental health often remains a downplayed or taboo topic, which leads to people neglecting its importance and avoiding talking about it. That's why our work in the field of mental health aims to increase public awareness of this issue and provide support for people struggling with various mental health challenges. We believe that taking care of mental health is crucial to creating a society full of understanding, empathy and solidarity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the most common disease in the world, and anxiety disorders are in second place. In Poland, approximately 2 million people struggle with depression, and approximately 4 million people struggle with anxiety disorders. In 2022, a total of 14,520 suicide attempts were recorded. Every third attempt resulted in death (5,108). There are also more suicide attempts among the youngest. According to data from the Police Headquarters, in 2022, a total of 2,178 suicide attempts by children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 were recorded in Poland. Of these, 85 involved children aged 7 to 12, and 2,093 involved adolescents aged 13 to 18. The problem of suicide does not exclude the Chodzież district. Alarming data obtained from the District Police Headquarters in Chodzież and the District Hospital in Chodzież show an increase of almost 120% in attempts and suicides between 2021 and 2022. In 2023, only until July - 16 people, including 5 children (!), tried to commit suicide , and 5 adults managed to do it. When analyzing the data, it should also be remembered that not all suicide attempts are reported or published in police statistics. These are alarming data that leave no doubt about the urgent need to provide effective psychological and psychiatric assistance to our community. According to the Wielkopolska Plan for Deinstitutionalization and Development of Social Services for 2023–2026: "In recent years, the occurrence of mental crises has been increasing, including among children and adolescents (according to the EZOP II study: 16% of children in the age group 0-6 years experienced developmental disorders - most often emotional, related to adaptation and social communication). However, a significant The problem in mental health care for children and adolescents is the lack of prevention (including in schools) and the inefficiency of the health care system, with a simultaneous increase in the number of people requiring support. Data on the number of children and adolescents with mental disorders that require professional help are similar many countries and concern approximately 10% of this population. In Poland, this percentage is at least 9%, which means that approximately 630,000 children and adolescents under the age of 18 require assistance from the psychiatric and psychological treatment system54. An increase in the number is also a disturbing phenomenon. suicide attacks, in particular among children and adolescents, with the main reasons for the attacks being mental illnesses/disorders or broadly understood mental crises. In the years 2017-2022, there was an increase in the number of suicide attacks both in Poland (by 30%) and Greater Poland (by 22%). Among children and adolescents up to 18 years of age, there was the largest increase in the number of suicide attacks, nationwide from 730 to 2,093 (187%), in the Greater Poland Voivodeship from 34 to 84 (147%) 55. In the light of these data, it is recommended to implement psychopreventive programs for children and young people and their families, as well as taking special care of families with children using social assistance, but not in the form of "special", dedicated activities only to this group, so as not to stigmatize these families. All mental health disorders of children and adolescents, regardless of their type, significantly impede everyday functioning (including school) and pose a threat to proper development. Children suffering from such disorders often have difficulties in carrying out key developmental tasks, which may lead to frustration and a sense of rejection, and in the future to mental disorders in adulthood. However, both diagnosis and therapy are difficult. Children do not seek help on their own, they often cannot express themselves, are not aware of their emotions or behaviors, and do not want to cooperate. (P. Kendall, Disorders of childhood and adolescence, GWP, Gdańsk 2004). The Hidden Dreams Foundation has been actively working to help people in mental health crisis for many years. In the period from June 2020 to June 2023, together with our partners, we implemented the project "Community Mental Health Center for the inhabitants of Chodzież County" (Leader AKME Foundation, Partners Hidden Marzenie Foundation, Remedium Specialist Assistance Center, Polish Widoki Association, Chodzież County. Financing WRPO 2014 ‐2020). As part of the project, we provided nearly 20,000 hours of support from various specialists in the form of individual and group meetings, including psychologists, psychiatrists, lawyers, dieticians, physiotherapists, neurological therapists and social workers. In addition, assistants were available to support the treatment process throughout the entire treatment period. Data collected during the project implementation showed that support was provided to 422 adults. The project results showed that access to psychological and psychiatric help has a significant impact on improving the mental health of people suffering from mental problems. People who received help under the project reported improved well-being, reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, and improved functioning in everyday life. The situation related to the end of the project left many people without the necessary psychological and psychiatric help, but also without social rehabilitation. The lack of support options has serious consequences for people struggling with mental health problems in our region. Many of them do not have the financial resources for private consultations, and the lack of access to professional help may lead to the deterioration of their health and an increased risk of suicide. Our experiences and the needs reported to us indicate the urgent need to ensure access to psychological and psychiatric help also for children and adolescents. In recent years, we have observed an alarming increase in the number of cases of mental disorders among the youngest residents of Chodzież County. Since the end of the above-mentioned and other projects, every day we observe an increase in people asking for psychological and psychiatric help and support. Even though we run the Support Point from our own funds and provide help to those most in need, we are not able to help all people who come to us. Our data shows that in the Chodzież district, since the end of the ŚCZP project (06/2023), a Mental Health Center financed by the National Health Fund has not yet been established, which means that the expectation according to data collected by our foundation for a visit to a psychologist or psychiatrist exceeds 2 months. In response to the increasingly common challenges related to mental health, on October 19, 2023, we submitted a petition to local government units, including the Mayor of Chodzież, City Councils, Commune Mayors, the Starosta of Chodzież County and County Councils, in which we appeal for the provision of free access to psychological and psychiatric help for children, adolescents and adults in our region. Our petition arose from deep concern for the mental health of residents and concern about the growing number of suicide attempts, especially among the youngest. Statistical data and our experience show that urgent action is necessary to provide comprehensive support for people affected by mental health problems. Thanks to our petition, submitted in an open competition for offers, we managed to obtain funds from the Municipality of Chodzież and the Chodzież Commune for psychological support. This is a huge step forward, for which we are extremely grateful. However, while we welcome this, we recognize that these measures are only part of the solution. The funds received are only enough to support a psychologist for 105 hours for 40 people, and their availability ends on December 15. What has been achieved is only the tip of the iceberg. One of these projects also includes funds for a social campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of mental health. We want to effectively reach out to the community to promote understanding and care for mental health. We are happy to announce that we have already implemented one promotional campaign in which we raised funds to promote the slogan "Mental health comes first". Our efforts are and will continue to be focused on mental health as we believe this is a particularly important area of action.
