Mission Statement
For children in Romania today, their basic education, the knowledge they acquire school and the environment in which they grow up are crucial for creating their future life options. The quality of education received before the age of 15 determines children’s life trajectory. According to PISA’s 2012 international survey, Romanian students are the least motivated of all students of the 65 countries analyzed. Other recent international studies demonstrate that Romania’s education system ranks towards the bottom of both European and global rankings. Teach for Romania's mission is to attract, select and develop talented young people to teach for two-years in Romania's most challenging schools and support them as change agents in Romanian education.
About This Cause
The Romanian education system is gradually worsening and becoming more unequal. As fewer qualified candidates are attracted to the profession, more and more students are falling behind. Teach for Romania intervenes with the goal of ensuring that every child has access to a world class education. VISION: Every child in Romania should have access to a high quality education and associated life options, regardless of region, type of school, or socio-economic status. MISSION: Attract, select and develop talented young people to teach for two-years in Romania’s most challenging schools and support them as change agents in transforming Romanian education. Attract, select, develop teachers: Recruit the brightest and most motivated Romanian students and young professionals from Romania and abroad. Each applicant undergoes rigorous selection process developed and refined in the Teach for All network and adapted to the Romanian context. Once selected, teachers attend a six-week academy where they are introduced to the theory and practice of teaching. The academy includes a summer school for children from low-income communities. Placement & support: Program participants are placed in clusters of low-income public schools as entry-level teachers. Teachers receive salary supplements to ensure that placements are financially viable. Teachers also receive on-going coaching and mentorship through on-staff Tutors, as well as mandatory trainings and workshops throughout the two years of teaching. Between the two years, teachers are encouraged to pursue a summer internship or project of their choice. Push for systemic change: After completing their two–year placements, alumni will be supported to either remain as teachers or pursue careers that will allow them to contribute to Teach for Romania’s vision. Alumni will become leaders in their fields and push for reforms to improve Romania’s education system. Periodic events will ensure that bonds formed during the program remain intact throughout alumni’s lives and careers.
