About This Cause

The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation was established in 1990 by Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, together with her father, King Michael I. In its 30 years of activity, the Foundation developed a wide variety of projects in the areas of education, community development, civil society, health and culture, projects that contributed to the spiritual and social renewal of Romania. Today, the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation is an elite non-governmental organization that supports children, young and elderly people through long-term projects, based on shared values and experiences between generations. During the last 30 years, the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation has offered the opportunity for a better life for 30,000 children from over 4,900 families while supporting 647 local NGOs, through dedicated programmes such as the Special Fund for Children, Generation Centers, My Cause, Investment in Rural Areas, Generations School. Children in dramatic life situations, facing extreme difficulties, at risk of dropping out of school, dealing with health problems and social exclusion are supported through the Special Fund for Children. The programme offers scholarships, free access to afterschool, summer camps for children proving remarkable progress in school, social counseling and assistance for families in need, holiday gifts and food. The Generations Centre in Bucharest meets the needs of children and elderly via an intergenerational approach, which is new and unique in Romania. The Centre brings together people from many generations and provides a framework in which the elderly, young people and children can socialise, learn new things, help each other and receive support from the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation. Each year, at the Generations Day Centre, 50 children receive daily a hot meal in the cafeteria, free after-school services and a wide range of educational and vocational activities in the company of young and senior volunteers on a daily basis. Since 2015, the intergenerational method has been extended to a national level. Today there are 23 intergenerational centers in 10 counties all over the country, through the Generations programme. My Cause project addresses people who want to support the education of a child in a difficult situation. Different social actors are supported to develop their own project and solve a problem they encounter in their community. The Investment in the Rural Areas strategic programme aims to prevent and reduce school dropout in rural areas or small communities, developing after-school centers as a main intervention method. 360 children are supported annually to continue their education, to improve their performance and to become socially integrated, and 8 after-school centers that carry out activities for children in the community are helped to develop and modernize education in rural areas. The Generations School - Preventing school dropout through community involvement project, co-financed by the European Social Fund - Operational Programme Human Capital, aims to prevent and reduce early school leaving, as well as encourage enrollment in the compulsory pre-university education system for the children attending two schools and a kindergarten in Bucharest. Each year, 369 students and preschoolers benefit from access to an afterschool, educational, artistic and sports activities, packages with clothing, footwear and hygiene products, camps, trips and workshops on various topics. The programmes developed by the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation build the future of young people by investing in education and talent. Talented young artists from low-income families, attending schools and universities of art and music in Romania, are supported through the Young Talents programme. Individual scholarships worth 2,000 euro for artistic development, facilitating intergenerational meetings with mentors or attending master classes and promoting their work help them achieve their true potential. Over the years, the programme has supported over 300 young people to develop from an artistic and personal point of view and to express their talent, thus contributing to the formation of Romania's cultural future. In its 30 years of activity, the Foundation has helped more than 200 young people from placement centers or from disadvantaged backgrounds to integrate socially and professionally, via the A Trade for Future programme. The Foundation is one of the few non-governmental organizations developping social programmes designed for elderly people, using an intergenerational approach, with the support of volunteers. Since 1993, the Foundation has helped the elderly in Romania through programmes aimed at combating isolation and loneliness and at improving their quality of life, such as The Special Fund for the Elderly, Our Seniors, The Seniors’ Club, Never Alone, the Flowers for the Soul Campaign, The Elderly Helpline, and Generations Centers. More than 180,000 elderly people have received support from the Foundation over time. Nowadays, approximately 1.5 million elderly in Romania are affected by loneliness to a larger or smaller extent, according to a national survey conducted by GfK for the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation in September 2015. Launched in 2015, The Elderly Helpline is the first free and confidential helpline, accessible at national level, dedicated to the elderly. The project aims at increasing the quality of life and social participation among the elderly and responds to the problems faced by the elders in Romania, as the only functional service of this type. Social counselors provide information, guidance, emotional support, and the volunteers build friendships with the lonely elderly. So far, 40,000 phone interactions have been recorded and over 7,000 elderly people have been unique beneficiaries of the information, counselling, socialisation services or alleviating loneliness.
