Mission Statement
Fundatia Inima de Copil - Heart of a Child helps children, parents, and their communities in difficult and at-risk situations with medical, educational, emotional, and economic support. We believe that poverty should not be a barrier to success and that every child, including those from underprivileged backgrounds, deserves to have hope for a happy childhood and a successful future.
About This Cause
Inima de Copil has been active for 28 years and has a wealth of expertise in various social and educational fields. We have invested over 10,7 million USD (from funding programs as well as private donors) in our programs, benefiting over 35,000 children and family members from multiple counties in eastern Romania. Our programs encompass social, educational, health, integration, prevention of school and family abandonment, and recovery for children and families in need, many of which are pioneering projects in post-communist Romania. Last year, in addition to supporting Romanian children and families in need, we also included Ukrainian refugees who fled from the war in our programs. We ran in 2024 programs with the following results and we continue this programs now: Projects Carried Out in 2024 – Summary of Results and Beneficiaries Day Care Centers Galați: 39 direct child beneficiaries, 103 indirect (siblings/parents). Children came from families at risk: abandonment, school dropout, disabilities, violence, or neglect. They received counseling, academic support, daily hot meals, school supplies, clothes, food, and participated in camps. Parents received dedicated support programs. Pechea Commune: 29 children from disadvantaged families benefited from similar comprehensive support. 73 indirect beneficiaries. 7 families affected by September floods received cleaning/hygiene products, clothing, furniture, school supplies, and renovation materials. One new house was built with volunteer support. Total: Over 6,000 hot meals provided. Community Assistance Center Over 4,000 people helped in 4 counties. Key educational support: • 30 rural children: 351 scholarships via One Village, One Child project • 33 children: scholarships, tutoring & mentoring via Future Acceleration Project with UiPath Foundation • 30 children from flooded areas received scholarships to stay in school • 722 Romanian & Ukrainian children received school supplies & backpacks • 59 children received tablets, laptops, desks/chairs for home learning • Renovated a reading room at "Dumitru Căpraru" School, Grivița, Galați Flood Relief (Cyclone Boris) Helped thousands in 20 localities in Galați & Vaslui counties: • 6+ tons of food, 15,000 hot meals, 4+ tons hygiene products, 6 tons clothing/footwear, baby products, household items • Renovated Cudalbi medical center • Donated medical supplies to 12 healthcare units • Supported over 200 families with furniture/appliances • Over 100 families received building materials • Contributed to building 5 houses in 4 localities • Volunteers helped with cleaning, renovation, and aid distribution • Transported aid from partners and companies Support for Families in Difficulty Around 20 families received emergency/material aid (food, hygiene, clothing). Also supported serious medical cases with financial assistance for treatments. Recovery Center for Children with Disabilities (Galați & Brăila) 113 children (Romanian & Ukrainian) received ~3,000 therapy sessions: physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychopedagogical support, occupational therapy, and social services. Parents received guidance for understanding and supporting recovery. Support for Ukrainian Refugees Ongoing assistance since war began, especially for families with children, elderly, and chronically ill individuals. Operated two Community Resource Centers (Galați & Brăila). In 2024: • 2,300+ refugees assisted • 175 children in educational groups & “Ukrainian School” program • 165 children joined extracurricular and integration activities • 7,960 hot meals provided • 120 children attended Romanian/digital skills courses (240 hours total) • 76 children supported to enroll in state schools/kindergartens • 10 refugees housed in foundation’s apartment (families/elderly) • 20 children & 10 adults with disabilities received recovery services • 70+ adults attended Romanian conversational courses; supported with translation for accredited courses • 2,852 info/referral services, 202 counseling sessions, 1,204 translations, 656 legal info services, 66 job placements • Donations: 1,800+ product packages, 815 vouchers/financial aid, 538 hygiene kits, 268 medicines/consult fees, 87 baby product packs, 521 clothing donations, 170 blankets, 144 school supplies, 152 Christmas gifts • 25+ Ukrainian women employed in centers (translators, educators, facilitators) Social Workshop Artisan workshop focused on job creation for vulnerable individuals. Employed 9 people in 2024 (8 from vulnerable groups). Partnered with local authorities, schools, and international funders to promote children’s rights, equality, and social justice. Contributed to the Sustainable Development Goals. Human Resources in 2024 42 employees/month (Romanian and Ukrainian), including 9 in the social workshop. 60+ volunteers involved in all activities.
