Mission Statement
We are a national organization that seeks to support women and girls in Rwanda to break the vicious circle of poverty and social exclusion by enabling them to become socially and economically capable to lead themselves and their community to better health, education, and social conditions.
About This Cause
Who we are Women for Women Rwanda (WfW-Rwanda) is a national non-governmental organization dedicated to empowering vulnerable women and girls throughout Rwanda. Our mission is rooted in addressing the systemic barriers that perpetuate poverty and gender inequality, with a vision of a society where every woman and girl is free to determine the course of her life and fully realize her potential. WfW-Rwanda believes that empowering women is essential to achieving inclusive social and economic development. By promoting dignity, equality, and freedom, we equip women with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to lead healthy, self-determined, and dignified lives. Our evidence-based, community-driven programs are designed to support women in becoming socially and economically capable. We enable them to take leadership in their households, contribute meaningfully to their communities, and build a future where they and their families can thrive. Through our work, WfW-Rwanda continues to be a catalyst for transformative change, particularly among those who have been most marginalized and excluded from development processes. We are committed to building a Rwanda where women are not only surviving but actively shaping their lives, their communities, and the future of the nation. WfW-Rwanda Approach At the heart of WfW-Rwanda’s methodology is a holistic, integrated empowerment model that addresses the complex and interconnected challenges faced by vulnerable women and girls in Rwanda. This approach extends beyond economic upliftment to encompass critical social, psychological, and structural dimensions of empowerment. The model is designed to facilitate transformation by equipping women with the essential tools and knowledge required not only to earn an income, but also to assert their rights, make autonomous decisions, and participate confidently in both household and public spheres. Central to this model is the Stronger Women, Stronger Nations (SWSN) Program, WfW-Rwanda’s flagship intervention. This year-long, comprehensive program offers a structured and dignified pathway for women to rebuild their lives, transition from vulnerability to self-reliance, and become active agents of change within their communities. Since its inception, the SWSN program has reached over 80,000 women across Rwanda, consistently demonstrating its efficacy in catalysing sustainable, woman-led development. Through SWSN program, participants receive training in core thematic areas including women’s rights and leadership, health and well-being, vocational and business skills, and financial literacy. These components are further reinforced through savings and loan group participation and direct connections to markets and support networks, enabling women to translate learning into practice. This integrated curriculum ensures that beneficiaries not only acquire technical competencies, such as marketable vocational skills and entrepreneurship acumen, but also cultivate critical soft skills such as self-confidence, negotiation, and community engagement. Through peer-to-peer learning, group solidarity, and mentorship structures embedded within the program, women experience both individual and collective growth. The intentional design of the program supports women as they transition from crisis to stability, from isolation to connection, and from dependence to leadership. Engaging Men as Allies WfW-Rwanda recognizes that gender equality cannot be achieved without the inclusion and support of men. In response, we developed the Men’s Engagement Program, which fosters the involvement of male community members, household heads, and leaders as partners in the journey toward women’s empowerment. This initiative encourages men to reflect on and challenge traditional norms that limit women’s potential. By creating spaces for dialogue and education, the program nurtures a culture of shared responsibility, respect, and collaboration. As men gain a deeper understanding of the mutual benefits of supporting women’s rights, households become more equitable, and community resistance to change is reduced. Men become active advocates who contribute to building safer, more inclusive environments for women to succeed. Supporting Young Mothers through the Caregiver Initiative To ensure inclusivity and accommodate the unique challenges faced by young mothers, WfW-Rwanda introduced the Caregiver Initiative. This innovative model supports women with young children by providing childcare services at training centers. This enables mothers to participate fully in the SWSN program without being burdened by caregiving responsibilities during training sessions. Through this initiative, WfW-Rwanda not only increases accessibility for mothers but also contributes to early childhood care and development. Children are placed in a safe and nurturing environment while their mothers focus on acquiring skills and knowledge. This support system reinforces the organization's commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty by simultaneously investing in both women and the next generation. Ensuring Sustainability through Graduate Support Empowerment does not end with the conclusion of the SWSN program. WfW-Rwanda ensures sustainability through the Graduate Support Program, which provides continued guidance and opportunity for growth after graduation. This program includes access to mentorship, financial services, advanced business development training, and linkages to markets and support networks. Graduates receive advanced training that helps them refine their business plans, expand their enterprises, and build resilience against market challenges. Mentorship pairs women with experienced business leaders or professionals who provide strategic advice and encouragement. Moreover, connections to cooperatives, savings groups, microfinance institutions, and local value chains enhance women’s ability to grow their income and reinvest in their families and communities. The Graduate Support Program is a critical component of our model. It recognizes that sustainable empowerment is a long-term process and ensures that women continue to receive the resources and support they need to reach their full potential as entrepreneurs, leaders, and change-makers. Our Impact in Numbers and Stories Over the years, WfW-Rwanda has directly served more than 80,000 women and girls through our programs, with thousands more indirectly benefiting from the ripple effects of their transformation. Participants consistently report significant improvements in household income, financial independence, health awareness, self-confidence, and participation in community decision-making. Our model has shown that when women are empowered, families are healthier, children are better educated, and communities are more resilient. Many of our graduates have gone on to become cooperative leaders, community organizers, entrepreneurs, and mentors to other women. Their stories of resilience and success are a testament to the power of holistic, rights-based, and women-led development. Looking Ahead: Growth and Innovation As WfW-Rwanda looks to the future, we remain committed to expanding our reach and deepening our impact. We are investing in data systems and monitoring tools to better measure long-term outcomes and refine our program design. We are exploring the integration of digital tools to enhance women’s access to information and markets. We are also strengthening our focus on environmental sustainability and climate-smart livelihoods to help women adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Additionally, we are building strategic partnerships to scale up successful initiatives and replicate our model in new regions of Rwanda (currently operating in seven out of 30 districts nationwide). With continued donor support, we will continue to innovate and evolve, ensuring that no woman is left behind.
