Mission Statement

Promoting gender equality and removal of various barriers which prevent women with any type of disability to participate in the country development

About This Cause

Girl and women with disabilities are subject to double discrimination because they women first and secondary have disabilities. Moreover, the vulnerability brought about by this intersectional identity puts women and girls with disabilities at greater risk of gender-based violence. They are both more likely to face sexual violence and abuse and less likely to access support before or following an attack. Many of them show a lack of self-esteem linked with economic and psychosocial dependence. For instance, girls and women with hearing impairments don’t hear the warning sounds of approaching predators while those with visual impairments don’t know where to run for protection. They are easy targets. In addition, negative attitudes and beliefs on disability, as well as a lack of technical skills on inclusion among health providers, education, judicial and law enforcement authorities and other stakeholders aggravate the situation. Although the progress registered by Rwanda in gender and disability promotion, girls and women with disabilities lack voices among women and persons with disabilities movement in general. This will not change until girls and women with disabilities’ voices are heard and they s stand to lead the change themselves, to share their interpretations and expectations from development, human, and women’s rights initiatives and thereby hold different stakeholders accountable. It is in that perspective that UNABU, the Rwandan Organization of Women with Disabilities created in 2004 by and for girls and women with disabilities embarked on the journey of empowering women with disabilities in rural areas in 2016. The organization started by helping girls and women with disabilities organize themselves into self-advocacy grassroots groups, equipping them with knowledge and skills on their rights as set out in international treaties such as the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and other national laws and policies part of its vision of promoting gender equality and the removal of various barriers preventing girls and women with disabilities (G&WWDs) from participating in country’s development. The organization remains sole organization of girls and women with various types of disabilities in Rwanda. The organization strives to ensure “Women with disabilities enjoy equal and equitable opportunities and actively participate in the country’s development”. UNABU mission consist of empowering women with disabilities to become agent of change, to demand their right and to affirm their dignity as human being. The organization currently implements disability rights and GBV prevention projects in 12 districts (Nyarugenge, Bugesera, Rwamagana, Nyagatare, Gicumbi, Rulindo, Gakenke, Musanze, Nyabihu, Rutsiro, Nyanza, Muhanga) of Rwanda and has reached out to around 6,232 Girls and women with disabilities organized into 214 self advocacy groups operating at cell level. Convinced that prevention of gender based violence against girls and women with disabilities require comprehensive approach targeting a wide range of stakeholder UNABU has since 2016 trained 417 GBV and justices Stakeholders on GBV and disability mainstreaming including representatives of 39 Isange One stop Centers; 536 SRHR& GBV non traditional allies ( cell authorities, IZU, community health workers, representatives of CNF, NCPD and NYC), representatives of women spaces etc . In line with creating supportive and protective surrounding environment for girls and women with disabilities UNABU reached out to 5, 640 community members through awareness raising on disability, rights, GBV and role of the community in protecting girls and women with disabilities since 2018 across the districts Rulindo, Nyarugenge, Gakenke, Nyabihu, Muhanga and Musanze.
