About This Cause

The New Charis Mission (hereafter known as ‘TNCM’) is a non-profit organisation registered with the Registry of Societies in 2006 and the Commissioner of Charities in 2007. TNCM is a full member of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) and an approved Institution of a Public Character (IPC). The 5 Mission Goals of TNCM comprise of : 1) Rebuilding Lives - Ex-offenders and Ex-Drug Addicts 2) Hope behind Bars – Prison Institutions 3) Wiring the Young Ones – Youth / Schools 4) Bringing Joy to the Aged - Elderly 5) Impacting Nations – Transformed Life-Stories (service & experiential learning) TNCM operates a Residential Rehabilitation Programme where the core beneficiaries are the ex-offenders and ex-drug addicts. The Executive Director, Mr. Don Wong and the Staff members have served in rehabilitation work for more than 30 years. The rehabilitation work took on a new level more than 15 years ago where the focus of rehabilitation work is more than just getting rid of a certain habit. It is the empowering of an individual to become social and economic contributor to the society. At TNCM, beyond what a halfway house for ex-offenders and ex-drug addicts, every individual who entered into the Residential Rehabilitation Programme has moved away from their past failures and destructive lives, developed new mindset and value system. They become Mentors running programmes in Schools for the at-risks students, Counsellors to the inmates in the prison and Befrienders to the lonely elderly. Once, they were the trouble and burden in their families, now they are able to provide support to their families. 1. Residential Rehabilitation Programme TNCM’s Residential Rehabilitation Programme is structured by the 3 key phases : Recovery, Restoration and Reintegration. • Recovery : Intake; Individual Counselling; Groupwork (Enrichment Residential Programme - develop self-awareness, building lifeskills and inculcating values) • Restoration : Family engagement; Individual Counselling; Work therapy • Reintegration : Discharge Planning; Training; Upgrading Our programme aims to transform ex-offenders and ex-drug addicts into social and economic contributors with 1 – 3 years programme. 2. Prison Programme The change journey for inmates always begins with a decision. TNCM’s desire is to help ambivalent inmates arrive at a decision for change and thereby empower them through hope to see through that choice made. The team from TNCM reaches out to the inmates through weekly counselling sessions. On an ad-hoc basis, we conduct mass talks to motivate and build confidence for change. Various structured programmes, such as Anti-Gang Booster Programme, Anti-Gang Campaign/Talks,, Intensive Counselling Programme. These are planned and conducted to impart life skills and tools to the inmates in order that they may be equipped to lead their lives differently. TNCM’s prison programme is to empower the ex-offenders to return to Prison, albeit not as inmates but as contributing empathic individuals. To reach the inmates, bringing hope behind bars. 3. Reformative Training Centre (RTC) Programme TNCM’s structured programme reaches to the young offenders as well through our Back-On-Track (BOT) Programme. It is a programme designed for these young ones. BOT is a groupwork intervention targetted at the recallees who relapsed during their supervision period. During sessions, mentors collaboratively work with inmates in discovering themselves, explore relapse prevention and prepare for subsequent release. 4. Youth/School Programme TNCM has had the opportunities to be in the earshot of the next generation via mass assembly talks on topics including drugs and gangsterism. With interest in increasing the awareness that students have about community needs, our team has also been invited on several occasions to share about the work of TNCM the youths. This was done in assembly sessions as well as organised learning journeys at the premises of TNCM. One of the programmes awarded to TNCM by different schools is a structured mentoring programme targeted at addressing the needs of youths-at-risk. Issues presented revolved about absenteeism, poor attitudes and gang involvement. Emphasis is placed on personally taking a genuine interest in the lives of these students while imparting values as well as life-skills during activities like dragon-boating, archery tag and recycled percussion. 5 years ago, TNCM embarked on her first ever After School Engagement (ASE) Programme. An 11-month-long programme is anchored by our youth workers based in the drop-in centre in the school. Recreational and enrichment activities are made available for the students, who also relate to our youth workers. A selected group of students also go through a customised programme, developing their leadership potential and guiding them in implementing school-wide projects. 5. Elderly Community Programme & Home Refurbishment Programme The programme aims at having the TNCM residents and the youths at-risk inculcate selfless, giving and compassion attitude towards the needy and people around them. This is done through a holistic elderly programme; weekly visitations and maintenance, monthly haircuts and birthday celebrations, quarterly outings, festivities celebrations with goodie bags and home refurbishment programme.
