Mission Statement

To nurture thriving communities by harnessing the power of the arts to create dialogue, invite social participation and build bridges across differences.

About This Cause

ArtsWok Collaborative is an arts-based community development organisation that seeks to re-imagine and develop thriving communities for a sustainable society. It does this through a range of community-based arts programmes that foreground the agency and creative ability of diverse individuals and communities to generate change. Since its founding in 2013, ArtsWok has worked with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement imaginative and innovative programmes that harness the power of the arts to create shared spaces for participation, cooperation and collaboration. Its public programmes focus on enabling its participants to encounter differences, engage in dialogue and build bridges across different perspectives. These include Both Sides, Now, an immersive arts experience initiated in 2013 that invites conversations about end-of-life issues. Between 2015 and 2020, ArtsWok presented the annual M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. Framed as “a festival with a social conscience”, its array of productions, workshops and mentorship programmes sought to engage young people on social issues, as well as to develop young theatre-makers. In addition to these, ArtsWok is focused on building the capabilities of practitioners and organisations who are vested in arts-based community development. In 2014, it established The Greenhouse Lab, an action-learning programme designed for practitioners who wish to expand or re-imagine the way they work with communities in their respective sectors. ArtsWok also facilitates The Greenhouse Sessions, a ‘community of practice’ series that brings together diverse professionals in the arts and community development for dialogue and exchange. Additionally, ArtsWok conducts research and shares knowledge on practices in arts-based community development. ArtsWok Collaborative is a recipient of the National Arts Council’s Major Grant 2021–2024 and an Institution of a Public Character.
