About This Cause

On a programme level, Playeum closes the opportunity divide by helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with special needs in Singapore develop confidence and life skills through our play and the arts programmes. On a systems level, we also empower the adults in the practice of working with children using play/arts in the social and education systems in Singapore by building a community of practice through training, advocacy, research. Charity Description Founded in 2009, and established as a charity in 2013, Playeum is an Institution of a Public Character (IPC) charity in Singapore that focuses on amplifying the voices and abilities of all children, especially children from disadvantaged backgrounds and children with special needs. Through play and the arts, we create a safe space and equal opportunities for children to develop life skills and the foundations they need to thrive – confidence, resilience and creativity to lead their lives and make meaningful contributions. Playeum creates systemic impact through outreach, training, advocacy, and research. We bring communities, civil society, governments, businesses and donors together to achieve sustainable impact with children. We believe this is the best way that we can effect real change in the way our society views children. 1. Social Impact Programmes In a world of inclusiveness and active participation, every child from every socioeconomic background can have the same opportunities to thrive through play, creation and having their voice heard. We partner schools and social service agencies to conduct play and the arts programmes to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with special needs develop life skills using the power of autonomous play. 2. Adult Education Through our ECDA-endorsed course Learning Through Play, training programmes, retreats and learning journeys, we inspire and empower adults on how to use the power of play to develop children. 3. Public Outreach We bring open-ended artful play into the community through in-person and digital play sessions, workshops, and project collaborations. 4. Research and Advocacy We invest in the ongoing efforts to develop practice-based research and evaluation of practices to better understand children’s engagement and development in authentic play experiences and their impact. Playeum is under MCCY and is a registered member of the National Council of Social Services and is supported by the MCCY Cultural Matching Fund.
