Our Vision For Africa to thrive. Our Purpose Driven by a deep love for our people, we won’t stop working until everyone on our continent has the resources they need. Our Mission To provide the resources that unlock the abundance of Africa so every African community can thrive.

About This Cause

What we do We, at ForAfrika South Africa, are continuously driven to enhance and expand the services that we provide to our communities. We have 14 years of experience at delivering solutions on the ground, managing our own logistics and programmes in all nine provinces in South Africa (Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, Limpopo and the North West). approach is a Complete Community Development (CCD) model which seeks to create enabling environments for children. We strategically and holistically integrate all our interventions in a bid to fight stunting and afford children and communities a better future! Our core programmes include: Food, Nutritional and Livelihoods, Emergency Response, Water and Sanitation, Health and Nutrition and Economic Empowerment. Our core programmes: Food Security & Livelihoods: Our food security and livelihoods programmes are tailored to not only alleviate short-term hunger but also to promote sustainable food systems that improve nutrition and uplift and transform communities. Such activities have also been shown to have a positive effect on mental health, especially for those who have been traumatised by conflict or natural disasters. Smallholder farmer groups are empowered through agricultural training, the provision of tools and seeds and the strengthening of local market linkages. The sale of surplus produce increases household income, providing a way out of abject poverty. We also provide community-based food distribution for those children who are not enrolled in an Early Childhood Development centre, and conduct nutritional awareness and training for members of the community. We also assist communities to develop Food security and gardens: in order to eradicate hunger, poverty and malnutrition in South Africa, food security is essential. Teaching communities and schools how to generate and maintain food gardens is imperative towards reaching this goal. Education In South Africa, our Early Childhood Development (ECD) Nutritional feeding programmes reach approximately 100 000 pre-school children in 3 000 centres with a highly nutritious porridge which constitutes of approximately 75% of a child’s daily nutritional requirements. We implement this programme across all nine provinces, feeding children on a daily basis. We believe that every child deserves a better future and we address the barriers to education through nutrition and teacher training in our school-feeding programmes. Adequate nutrition is key to education and our programmes are designed to alleviate hunger, improve children’s concentration and energy, boost school attendance and ensure that they are getting the essential nutrients they need to reach their full potential. Providing a meal at school is also a way of ensuring children are in a safe space during the day and helps to relieve the burden on families who struggle to provide adequate food at home. The systematic support, provision of age-appropriate learning materials as well as teacher training and refresher courses reinforce and enhance learning and development. Our Education Programme interventions are designed to address barriers to access education, promote education, promote child nutrition, improve child's attention span and cognitive ability, encourage learning, improve the learning environment, empower and restore dignity to children and teachers. Health & Nutrition Malnutrition appears in various guises and Africa suffers from the “double burden of malnutrition”- where undernutrition and over nutrition coexist. Both can lead to disease or death. According to the World Health Organisation, nearly half of deaths among children under five years of age are linked to undernutrition (also known as wasting). We collaborate with other organisations and clinics to provide children with the necessary healthcare required should they suffer from any nutrition based illness. ForAfrika trains communities on the importance of nutrition and breast feeding for babies. We work in collaboration with ECD centres to not only provide nutritional support but to also create awareness on this important subject. Management of malnutrition in women and children involves supplementary feeding with fortified rice or porridge, dietary counselling and routine medical treatment. Our health and nutrition programme interventions are designed to save lives, alleviate suffering, improve nutrition and health and develop resilience and stability Water, Sanitation & Hygiene ForAfrika South Africa works within Parent-Teacher Associations to provide nutrition, agricultural training, and seedlings to families. This increases food security within the home, while our community gardens provide food security on a larger scale, including a model for cash crops. Water and sanitation: because many of the Early Childhood Development centres and the communities that we work with do not have a source of water on-site, ForAfrika South Africa tries to find solutions to the problem of water availability. Provision of Hippo Rollers assists with the transporting of 90 litres of water for households and schools, and water catchment systems (through gutters and JoJo tanks) assist with water provision in rural areas. Sanitation is of utmost importance to prevent the spread of disease, and ForAfrika South Africa’s water and sanitation programme provides washbasins for schools, as well as training on sanitation for teachers, parents, and children. We also provide basic sanitation training at community-based food distribution points. Economic Empowerment A resilient population will be able to withstand the shocks brought on by geopolitical events and climate change. When people are economically empowered, they will better be able to deal with disaster when it strikes and able to provide for themselves and their families. Our economic empowerment activities aim to equip communities with the power to access and manage the resources they need for a sustainable livelihood, as well as to have greater agency in their interactions with social institutions and other social actors who occupy relative positions of power. Economic empowerment mainly involves including marginalized groups in a range of farm- and market-based commercial activities, such as communal gardens, tool-making, selling surplus produce or registering Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers. We regard our ECD centers as small businesses which we support and equip to become resilient and grow. Through our partnerships, we provide various training for them such as teaching training as well as basic business administrative skills which enable them to run their businesses successfully. We also enable them through our empowering them to develop their own gardens and not only feed their creches but also sell to the communities and generate some income. Our Economic Empowerment programme interventions are designed to improve food security, uplift women and youth, improve skills, develop stability and resilience, promote community transformation and restore dignity. Emergency Response Our emergency response team is made up of trained technical specialists, ready to be deployed at short notice. Our goal is to transition the situation as quickly as possible from an emergency response to rehabilitation and recovery so communities can rebuild their livelihoods. Further, we work to increase community resilience to future emergencies through agricultural rehabilitation, complete value chains (the process that increases the value of raw produce), and support to small-holder agricultural market systems. Our emergency response programme interventions are designed to save lives, alleviate suffering, stabilise communities, rehabilitate communities, increase resilience and prepare for future disasters. ForAfrika South Africa, works with strategic partners to rapidly bring humanitarian interventions at critical times History Formerly known as JAM, ForAfrika was founded in 1984 to serve the African continent. The Organization’s subsequent rapid growth was a direct result of our founder’s eyewitness experience of the horrors of starvation in Africa. Since its inception, over the last three decades, we have progressed as an organisation that reflects strong, expansive development, and this is how it affects meaningful change. In South Africa, we started implementing our programmes in 2005 as a country office of the global group to address our country’s unique needs. South Africa has both a first and a third world economy, which exist parallel to one another. Unemployment, poverty, and inequality remain severe challenges, and crime and poverty are widespread in informal settlements. ForAfrika South Africa concentrates on early childhood development, nutrition, and food security for children and communities throughout South Africa. Through our partnerships with local government, various organisations, and donors, ForAfrika South Africa feeds over 120 000 children in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in informal settlements throughout South Africa every school day. In 2014 we introduced nutritional assessments so that the impact of our programmes could be accurately measured. ForAfrika South Africa continues to be an organisation that is passionate about the early health and development of our vulnerable children, and to ensure that these precious and valuable individuals receive the nutrition they need to grow into productive, healthy and strong adults.
