About This Cause
When a group of young professionals who studied together in the early 2000s reunited about 15 years later, they reflected on the challenges they endured in their respective journeys. They had one thing in common. They all came from extreme poverty, and previously disadvantaged areas of South Africa. This is the story of how Maluti Foundation came to exist. Having started our tertiary education at the University of Free State, QwaQwa campus (then University of the North, QwaQwa campus), we reminisced on how selfless efforts of icons like Mr T.I. Makume encouraged so many young people to achieve things thought impossible at that time. Though we had relocated to different cities due to employment and studies, we still knew that the areas from which we came still suffered from unemployment, poverty, and lack of access to quality education. Even in the cities where we lived, we still witness many young people from poor backgrounds struggle with the same challenges that we had to overcome. As we talked more and more about this, we all found that we each had a special place in our hearts for the subject of education and development in the disadvantaged areas. It was time for us to use our diverse skills and experience to give back to our communities. In 2017, the group aggregated their ideas under the intervention areas of Education and Economic Development, to form Maluti Foundation. OUR OBJECTIVES • To help improve access to quality education for people in disadvantaged communities. • To contribute to reduction in unemployment amount people in disadvantaged communities. • To help create or improve conditions that favour the successful creation and sustainability of small and medium enterprises within disadvantaged communities.
