Mission Statement
NOAH enables social pensioners to remain active and independent through participation, purpose and possibility.
About This Cause
NOAH, a registered Non Profit Organisation and Public Benefit Organisation, was established in 1981 and ensures that more than 750 social pensioners are able to continue to lead independent, purposeful and dignified lives on a social grant of R1700 per month. NOAH not only supports them to remain independent but in so doing supports families and communities. The NOAH model mitigates the cold harsh reality of abject poverty, through: • 12 safe, compliant, affordable communal houses offering dignity, companionship and independence to 120 residents • 2 primary health care clinics, offering bi-weekly doctors’ clinics with a focus on preventative and promotive health services including observations, medication distribution and compliance oversight, advice, referrals and support services such as Physiotherapy, Podiatry and therapeutic massage for 447 members • 2 community centres offering meals, financial support, social support, wellness support, access to information, and referrals to 151 members • 7 Social Enterprise Development projects for individuals to generate income and for cost-recovery for NOAH In addition, NOAH has active engagement with the Provincial Government and is a founder member of STTOP (Sector Task Team for Older Persons) for advocacy, lobbying and innovation. The impact: 1. Immediate reduction in poverty as residents are able to house, clothe and feed themselves, and provide for their health needs 2. Increased self-esteem and sense of security from the reduced burden on the family 3. Ability to contribute to families, especially grandchildren eg. financial assistance with school fees, clothing and extra mural activities The result of this is the increased number of beneficiaries who remain healthy and active for as long as possible, have a sense of purpose, feel useful, happier, content and who remain in control of their lives for as long as possible, ie. an improved quality of life for social pensioners and their families
