Mission Statement
Our Vision ‘To give vulnerable children in need of care and protection, a turning point opportunity of personal and individualised nurturing care in a safe and stable environment that enables them to have a childhood, thrive and be educated, building their resilience and life skills towards an independent future’ and to provide a transitional solution for orphaned and vulnerable children enabling the reunification back to their own biological families or the adoption into new forever families. Our Goal To position the work of Hearts of Hope in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and work towards the goals of no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being and quality education. Our Purpose To provide each of our children with a secure home, access to food, nutritional and medical support and quality education – thus ‘giving them back their childhood’ and giving them a future.
About This Cause
Hearts of Hope is a South African Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) and Non Profit Company (NPC) that strives to enhance the lives of orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children in our care through quality individual care and development, allowing them a childhood. Hearts of Hope has been in operation since 2003, having begun as a group of volunteers in 1997. We pride ourselves in our strong governance procedures and operating systems. Our core project is in Wendywood, Johannesburg South Africa where we provide residential care for 52 children at any one time. Since 2008, over 290 children have been cared for. 15-18 children leave annually to be reunited with extended family or to be adopted. What does Hearts of Hope aim to achieve? Hearts of Hope, through the provision of family-style care where vulnerable children are looked after in a safe, protected and supportive way. The children are provided with the necessary nutrition, education, therapeutic, psycho-social, and medical interventions. Hearts of Hope is a transitional solution for children under the age of 14 with the intent for the children to be reunited with extended family or adopted. Hearts of Hope care for the orphaned and vulnerable children who are sick, neglected, abused, vulnerable, at risk, facing trauma, and impacted by pandemics such as HIV and COVID-19. We care for children between the ages of 0-18 who can be nurtured, developed and educated by providing a deep level of care until local and international adoptions can be facilitated or the re-unification of the children with their extended families if possible. Hearts of Hope has developed processes and best practices that ensure that the children have access to quality care and provided with a childhood within a nurturing and safe environment, and a better life. Hearts of Hope aims to ensure that increased numbers of independent, well socialised, resilient children who are equipped with the key life-skills needed, will be the result of our programmes, and who will ultimately leave the care of Hearts of Hope, either to new forms of care or as young adults. How does Hearts of Hope achieve its vision? We achieve our vision through the implementation of the following programmes and outcomes: 1. Residential Care: Access to a place of safety and security for orphans and vulnerable children 2. Health and Well-being: Sustained nutritional and physical activities for each child preventing impaired growth development, inadequate psycho-social stimulation and avoiding medical interventions 3. Remedial and Psycho-social support: Provision of play therapy, psycho-social support and counselling, Occupational Therapy and remedial learning support 4. Medical intervention: Control of chronic diseases and infection prevention 5. Education: Access to formal education to tertiary level and the provision of an on-site Early Childhood Development Centre (Kindergarten) How do we measure the success of Hearts of Hope? We utilise Wellbi – an online monitoring and evaluation tool, that assists organisations to measure and evaluate the impact that they have on the children in their care. Using the internationally developed Children’s Status Index, different domains are tracked and measured at different intervals throughout the year, which enables a project to provide qualitative and quantitative reports on each child in their care. There are 8 domains tracked by Wellbi: • Food and Nutrition; Shelter and Care; Protection; Health; Psycho-social; Education and Skills Training; Spiritual and Community; Economic A baseline assessment test is performed with the child and the answers to the various questions are tracked online on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. The numbers of children who are reunited with biological family or extended family; or adopted into new ‘forever’ families are also tracked and provide a clear indicator of the success of the project.
