Mission Statement

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is a global network of principled medical and other professionals working in teams, small and large, to respond to the medical needs of people affected by conflict, disasters and epidemics and those excluded from healthcare. MSF is a Medical Humanitarian Organisation funded by individuals like you, in order to stay Independent, Neutral and Impartial. Our work is guided by medical ethics and the humanitarian principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence. Helping people only based on need...irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. Impartial - We provide free medical care to people who need it. It doesn’t matter which country they are from, which religion they belong to, or what their political affiliations are. When patients come to our medical facilities, we treat those who are in most urgent medical need first, no matter who they are. Neutral - In conflict situations, we do not take sides, but go where people’s medical needs are greatest. In the ward of one MSF field hospital, you might find wounded civilians alongside injured soldiers from opposing sides. Hostilities and weapons have to be left at the gate. Independent - MSF makes decisions based on our own independent assessment of the medical needs of people in distress. Our independence from political, economic, religious and other powers means that we can make decisions and take action based solely on medical needs and a firm commitment to our principles.

About This Cause

Founded in 1971 as a not-for-profit organisation, today MSF is present in more than 70 countries, where thousands of MSF doctors, nurses, logisticians, water-and-sanitation experts, and other medical and non-medical professionals work together to bring essential health services to people caught in humanitarian crises. Services and activities include provision of emergency medicine, response to epidemics, war surgery, nutrition and vaccination campaigns, operating feeding centers for malnourished children, mental health care and support to hospitals and clinics. In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF provides essential health care, rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centers for malnourished children, and offers mental health care. When needed, MSF also constructs wells and dispenses clean drinking water, and provides shelter materials like blankets and plastic sheeting. Through longer-term programmes, MSF treats patients with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, sleeping sickness, and HIV/AIDS, and provides medical and psychological care to marginalised groups such as street children. MSF is often one of the first humanitarian organisations to arrive at the scene of an emergency. Its large-scale logistical capacity ensures that MSF emergency teams hit the ground with the specialised medical kits and equipment they need to start saving lives immediately.
