Mission Statement

World Vision is a global humanitarian organisation dedicated to helping the most vulnerable children, families and their communities reach their full potential by tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice. This foundation compels us to serve all people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender. At our core, we believe that building a better future can only happen when children are at the centre of our focus, and that changing their lives requires us to examine their needs holistically. More simplistically, to uplift the child we must uplift their community. We respond to these needs through long-term development, disaster relief and advocacy on behalf of the poor, employing a comprehensive range of services that help children and families build better futures and enjoy the fullness of life.

About This Cause

BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN Every 60 seconds … a family gets water … a hungry child is fed … and a family receives the tools to overcome poverty. WHO WE ARE World Vision is one of the world’s largest and longest running Humanitarian, Development and Advocacy NGOs. With vast experience in responding to emergencies over the last 70 years, we are dedicated to helping the most vulnerable children, families and their communities reach their full potential, by tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice. Today, we continue to work in the hardest to reach, extreme places where the poorest of the poor live. Where it is hardest to be a child. We believe that is where we are needed most, serving all people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender. HOW WE WORK World Vision South Africa has been working alongside rural and urban communities across our country since 1967. At our core, we believe that building a better future can only happen when children are at the center of our focus and can work up to 15 years in one community, responding to their needs holistically. We respond to these needs through long-term development, disaster relief and advocacy on behalf of the poor, employing a comprehensive range of services that help children and families build better futures and enjoy the fullness of life. Development: Our unique and child focused, integrated model of development, is the foundation on which our work is built. It reflects our Christian faith and calling, and it empowers communities, families and children to improve and sustain child well-being by equipping them to set their own goals - so that progress is sustained, and continues to improve, long after we’ve left. Advocacy: Our advocacy at local and national levels is focused on changing unjust policies, practices and structures affecting the most vulnerable children. Our emphasis through 2021 is ending violence against children. Emergencies: In natural disasters and conflicts, World Vision’s global emergency response capacity means that in South Africa, we can deliver life-saving assistance immediately and then walk alongside children, families and communities to help them recover and rebuild. A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO TRANSFORMING LIVES Our work integrates our global expertise in five priority sectors to maximize impact in the lives of the most vulnerable children. 1) CHILD PROTECTION: We work with communities and countries to prevent abuse, exploitation and other violence against children; to ensure this is addressed effectively when it occurs; and to help restore children who have been harmed. In South Africa, our current focus is to increase the protection of girls and boys from violence. This is achieved by equipping faith leaders and community members to take practical actions in prevention, care and advocacy in order to promote child well-being for the most vulnerable in their communities. We also empower families to enjoy positive loving relationships, and be able to plan and work together towards achieving their hope and vision for the future. Currently, the following outcomes are being pursued: • Caregivers and Families of most vulnerable children respect, nurture and protect all girls and boys • Girls and boys have life skills and resilience to protect themselves and their peers from abuse, exploitation and other forms of violence against children • Formal and informal Child Protection mechanisms are collaborating effectively in protecting boys & girls from abuse, exploitation, neglect and other forms of violence against children, especially the most vulnerable 2) EDUCATION: We help ensure that girls and boys are educated so they can reach their full potential and contribute to their communities and countries. In South Africa we influence the provision of quality age appropriate early childhood care and development for girls and boys through the following outcomes: • Improved access and quality of early childhood development for children aged 3-5 years • Improved literacy and numeracy for primary school children • Improved ability of youth to pursue their desired career path after graduation 3) NUTRITION: Over the last five years, 89% of the severely malnourished children we treated made a full recovery. In South Africa we focus on good nutrition, protection from infection and disease, and access to essential health services to improve health and reduce mortality. In South Africa, we ensure that children and mothers survive and thrive through the following outcomes: • Women and their supporters adopt household practices that promotes good health and nutrition for children • Increased adoption of healthy practices by adolescents • Improved care and support provided for adolescents living with HIV & AIDS • Improved implementation of health policies focusing on child and adolescent health 4) LIVELIHOODS: Together we have impacted the lives of over 200 million vulnerable children globally by tackling the root causes of poverty. Because productive and resilient livelihoods are key to breaking the cycle of poverty, we strengthen families’ capacity to provide well for their children by strengthening skills and improving access to capital and markets. In South Africa we are focused on empowering Women and Youth economically to be able to provide well for themselves and their children through the following outcomes: • Women and youth are ready for economic participation • Improved women and youth enterprise • Increased access to funding for women and youth enterprises • Improved ability of municipalities and community leaders to manage disasters 5) WATER & HYGIENE: World Vision is reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds and reaches three more schools every day with clean water. Our goal is to ensure clean water and hygiene for everyone, everywhere we work. In South Africa, we are focused on improved access to clean water and hygiene facilities in poor and vulnerable communities for children and youth. Currently, the following outcomes are being pursued: • Improved knowledge in hygiene promotion and behavior change practices • Increased access to sustainable and safe water supply • Increased access to hygiene facilities World Vision South Africa has demonstrated impact through our work in community development, advocacy and relief and have contributed to the improved well-being of approximately 5 million beneficiaries throughout South Africa.
