Mission Statement
COGAM's mission is to achieve real and effective equality for all people without exclusions in a diverse society, eradicating any type of discrimination of rights that must be guaranteed through public and free services accessible to all people regardless of their own conditions.
About This Cause
COGAM is the LGTB + collective in Madrid that has been working for the equality of LGTB+ people for more than 30 years . It is one of the founding entities of the FELGTB and one of the promoters from the beginning of equal marriage in Spain. In addition, COGAM develops numerous projects to raise awareness and make visible the diversity of the LGTB + collective . Among others, we practice the rapid HIV test , we go to educational centers to give talks at secondary schools about sexual and gender diversity and we have an information service for the LGTB + community . But we could not carry out this work without the contribution of our members and our volunteers, the public and private contributions. COGAM is a non-profit association ( NGO ), democratic, participatory, pluralistic and independent. COGAM , is an association registered in the registry of associations of the Autonomous Community of Madrid with number 7488 dated 09/28/86, with registered office at Calle de La Puebla 9 in Madrid. COGAM is declared a PUBLIC UTILITY association in the BOE : BOE 109 of 5/7/2005 , in reference to article 32 of Organic Law 1/2002, of March 22, regulating the Right of Association (BOE No. 73, of 03-26-2002) and the Public Utility. The pourposes of COGAM: * The defense of Human Rights contained in the Charter of the United Nations and especially those that refer to lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals, their dignity as persons, the free development of their personality , the search for equality social , to the elimination of discrimination , etc. * Work for a more plural and respectful society, promoting the conditions so that the freedom and equality of people and the groups in which they are integrated are real and effective . * Promote the complete legal and social equality of all people regardless of their sexual orientation or identity and the affective-sexual relationships that they have with the full consent of another person(s). * Promote the elimination of any homophobic, transphobic or bifobic behavior . Promote the elimination of any discrimination against people living with HIV . Right to free public medical and psychosocial assistance to all HIV-positive people. For the fulfillment of our purposes we carry out the following activities: *Activities aimed at meeting the psychosocial needs of lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals: - Reception: first contact making through a personalized interview in which reciprocal information is collected and provided between the user and the professional. - Information , guidance and advice. - Treatment and follow-up of cases : relationship of help with counseling. - Direct telephone attention . - Preparation of training material . - Development of resources for lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals. - Statistical data collection . - Creation of monographic Working Groups : gays, lesbians, transsexuals, bisexuals, the elderly, deaf, fathers and mothers, coming out of the closet, HIV , etc. - Training activities . - Studies of the popular and technical news that from psychology address homosexuality and transsexuality. * Activities aimed at meeting the legal, health, educational, cultural, sports needs of lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals: - Information , guidance and advice to individuals and entities. - Preparation of information and training material. - Training activities . - Coordination activities with public services . - Advice to individuals and entities in studies that from the educational field address homosexuality and transsexuality. - And others of a similar nature Our history: COGAM was founded in September 1986 at a time when HIV and AIDS hit gays hard and has been the engine of change and transformation in Madrid and Spanish society after constant incorporation of new diversities and the achievement of important social and legislative achievements. COGAM works and has worked for the equality of lesbians, gays, transsexuals, bisexuals and other realities of diversity through different lines of action: * Socialization: we have groups for people with a certain sexual orientation / identity, as well as groups of people who have common interests. * Claim: we develop and vindicate policies of change and social transformation aimed at equality of all diversities without exclusions, any political party being always independent but working with parties and organizations to achieve social progress. * Assistance: we have programs developed by professionals to help people who need it in matters such as: HIV and STIs , discrimination, psychology, access to health, medicine, sexology, legal ... * Communication : we have been the forerunners of LGTB + media when they did not exist with the magazine Entiendes, the Luna de Babilonia radio program and the television program Hasta en las Mejor Familias, which have been precursors and catalysts of different communication media aimed at the LGTB + population.
