About This Cause
Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida was founded in October 1993 as a community patient based organization with the aims to make AIDS visible among the Spanish society and to support people living with HIV and AIDS. The organization started in 1994 a program to inform and educate patients on HIV and its treatment (INFOTRAT), which provides yearly 450 individual treatment counseling sessions. Furthermore, once a year INFOTRAT organizes a Conference for people living with HIV in Barcelona which gathers over 400 patients. In 2003 Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida implemented the National HIV Testing Day in Spain and is involved in the organization of the European HIV Testing Week. In 2006, the organization opened the first Community-Based Center for HIV testing for MSM in Spain, called BCN Checkpoint. During the years of existence this model of intervention has shown to be very cost-effective in detecting new HIV cases with a high percentage of linkage to care, and supported the implementation of similar projects in other European countries, like Portugal, Greece or Italy
