Mission Statement
ECPAT SWEDEN - AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE FIGHT AGAINST THE COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. The commercial sexual exploitation of children is a crime that is happening everywhere – in Sweden, and abroad, offline and online. Every year, children are forced into the global sex trade. A price is put on children as if they were just a commodity. It can involve the sexual abuse of children being documented in photos or on film. This is often referred to as child pornography; however, this is misleading as it has nothing to do with pornography. It is in fact evidence of a sexual crime against a child. The commercial sexual exploitation of children can also involve children being sold in Sweden or abroad for the purpose of sexual exploitation, as well as Swedes travelling in order to sexually exploit children.
About This Cause
WHAT DOES ECPAT SWEDEN DO? ECPAT is working to achieve a world free of the commercial sexual exploitation of children by means of lobbying work, preventive measures and raising awareness so that more people can respond and take action. We are currently focusing on the sexual exploitation of children online. Sexual crimes against children on the Internet are increasing, as is the volume of material depicting abuse. We want to combat this by targeting child sexual abuse material, and improving the protection of children from sexual abuse online. ACHIEVEMENTS IN OUR FIGHT 1996 – THE FIRST WORLD CONGRESS AGAINST COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN The First World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children is held in Stockholm. For the first time ever, the world united around a joint declaration and action plan signed by 122 governments. ECPAT Sweden is formed in connection with the World Congress. 1998 – CODE OF CONDUCT FOR TRAVEL COMPANIES A code of conduct is developed to stop perpetrators from traveling to exploit children sexually. 95% of Swedish travel agencies adopt the code, along with numerous travel companies all over Europe. 1999 – CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT After mounting pressure, the Swedish Parliament amends the constitution to criminalise the possession of images and films that depict the sexual abuse of children. 2005 – BLOCKING PARTNERSHIP A blocking partnership is established between the Swedish Police and 13 Internet service providers. As a result, tens of thousands of attempts to access webpages containing child sexual abuse material was stopped – every day. 2005 – ECPATHOTLINE.SE A hotline is set up to receive anonymous web-based reports about sexual exploitation of children. All relevant reports are passed on to police and INHOPE, an international organisation and partner of Interpol. 2008 – FINANCIAL COALITION AGAINST COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN The Financial Coalition against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children is established. Today, it’s virtually impossible to buy child sexual abuse material with regular credit cards. 2016 – TOUGHER PENALTIES A report proposes that fines are removed as a punishment for certain sexual crimes against children. This is something ECPAT Sweden has been working towards for several years.
