Caritas Switzerland, an independent operational not-for-profit organization founded in 1901, is one of Switzerland’s most respected and influential charities, both in the area of social work inside the country as well as regards international development cooperation and humanitarian aid.
About This Cause
Caritas Switzerland, an independent operational not-for-profit organization founded in 1901, is one of Switzerland’s most respected and influential charities, both in the area of social work inside the country as well as regards international development cooperation and humanitarian aid. It is a member of Caritas Internationalis, the federation of more than 160 national Caritas organizations worldwide. As for our – Caritas Switzerland`s- international work we are currently implementing 187 projects in 30 developing countries, almost half of those fragile states (e.g. Syria, Chad, South Sudan, Kosovo etc.). Projects are run by our program staff and our thematic advisors based at our headquarter in Lucerne in close collaboration with our regional offices in 20 developing countries, local Caritas entities and proven project partners. Staff at headquarters in Lucerne totals up to 350 employees while having ca. 210 local staff to manage aid projects on the ground in developing countries Working impartially, independently and neutrally, Caritas Switzerland is committed to poverty reduction and a world governed by solidarity, equity and peace, in which the rights and dignity of every human being are respected. The Human Rights canon and the Sustainable Development Goals represent our points of reference. Caritas Switzerland’s international cooperation is focused on six fields of activity: 1) water, sanitation and hygiene; 2) food security and markets; 3) migration; 4) climate change and disaster risk reduction; 5) education and income an 6) humanitarian aid and emergency rehabilitation. Caritas Switzerland is also a member of other networks active in international cooperation , such as Alliance Sud, Swiss Forum on Rural Advisory Services (SFRAS), Swiss Water Partnership (SWP), Aguasan, Swiss Water and Sanitation Consortium, Swiss NGO DRR Platform, REPIC, SDC Migration Network, Swiss Civil Society Platform on Migration and Development, Household Energy Network (HEDON), Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR), and Christian Organizations against Trafficking in Human Beings (COATNET).
