Mission Statement
The Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center is a non-governmental charitable organization dedicated to honouring the memory of the victims of the Babyn Yar tragedy which happened in Kyiv, Ukraine during the World War II and promoting humanization by preserving and studying the history of the Holocaust. As a result of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, we are suspending most of the projects to focus on humanitarian aid for civilians, evacuation of people (with the focus on elderly) and protection of cultural heritage.
About This Cause
FOUNDATION FOCUSES ITS EFFORT ON THREE PROGRAMS 1. Humanitarian aid for civilians, the elderly, and people with disabilities The BYHMC provides humanitarian aid to civilians in partnership with the foundations that cooperate with the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. We pay special attention to vulnerable populations — all those who have special needs during the war. These groups include people with disabilities, the elderly who survived the Holocaust, and the Righteous — people who, risking their lives, saved Jews during World War II. 2. Evacuation Holocaust survivors, the Righteous, and their families from the areas of active hostilities in Kyiv and Kharkiv as well as Eastern and Southern Ukraine can expect the Memorial’s help and evacuation. We assist with housing in Western Ukraine, Israel, and the European Union. About 2000 volunteers are in the program. We are going to increase the volunteer network up to 4,000 of people. 3. Protection of cultural heritage During the war, we will undertake the task of preserving the cultural heritage. Culture and art have always been one of the priorities of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. The memorial will assist with the evacuation of archives and art collections, primarily those related to the history of the Holocaust. We also seek to evacuate prominent Ukrainian cultural figures from the areas of active hostilities. The BYHMC will implement this project in partnership with the Government of Ukraine, international organizations tasked with the protection of cultural heritage, and museums.
