Mission Statement

DAY-MER was set up on 11 November 1989 to work with and on behalf of Turkish and Kurdish people living and working in London to help them solve their problems and promote their cultural, economic, social and democratic rights; to strengthen solidarity among themselves as well as local people; and to help their integration into the society.

About This Cause

Established in 1989, Day-Mer Turkish and Kurdish Community Centre works on behalf of Turkish/Kurdish people in London, helping solve their problems and promoting their cultural, economic, social and democratic rights. Day-Mer’s distinct focus is on the immediate social issues community members face in the process of settlement, including welfare, destitution, housing, health, employment and immigration issues, and long-term social inclusion needs associated with language barrier, cultural factors, disability, age and gender. Day-Mer aims to provide quality controlled, direct community services; enable migrants and refugees to reach their full potential; ensure service accessibility; respond to changing needs; encourage integration; increase understanding of ethnic minorities and refugees in the wider community; and develop co-operation between migrant and refugee community organisations. Day-Mer's offer reaches over 6,000 people annually. Day-Mer’s community members face issues of job insecurity, poor working conditions, lack of legal rights, discrimination, unemployment and complex family issues often exacerbated by living on low income in areas of high deprivation. These were the needs prior to Covid-19; needs that have only been further exacerbated by the crisis. Day-Mer’s services include welfare and immigration advice, education and youth services, social/cultural activities, and literacy classes for women, all with outreach elements. Day-Mer also has a track record of delivering service commissions and projects funded by local/regional authorities, independent funders, the Lottery and EU. In addition, Day-Mer’s cultural activities are an integral part of its work, complementing services by helping to improve interpersonal, social and creative skills, build social networks and enable social inclusion.
