Mission Statement
Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity, provides cutting edge, life-saving equipment, family accommodation and arts, music and play therapy for patients and their families at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Since 1995, The Grand Appeal has generated over £40 million to transform the lives of sick babies and children at the Hospital and Special Care Baby Unit.
About This Cause
2016 is the 21st Anniversary of the Grand Appeal and we’re delighted to have raised over £40 million thanks to the amazing support of our fundraisers from Bristol, the South West and all over the UK. Since 1995, The Grand Appeal has helped to transform the lives of sick babies and children at Bristol Children’s Hospital and the Special Care Baby Unit, providing life-saving equipment, patient activities, new services and family accommodation. 2016 also marks the 150th anniversary of the very first children’s hospital in Bristol. Bristol Children’s Hospital is one of the UK’s leading children’s hospitals, treating over 100,000 patients every year from across the South West, South Wales and beyond with life-threatening illnesses, and serving as the paediatric intensive care centre for the whole South West region. The hospital is an international specialist centre of excellence for a range of services including neurosurgery, burns, cardiac, leukaemia and bone marrow transplants. The Grand Appeal provides ground-breaking facilities at the Hospital, including the South of England’s only 3T MRI scanner and intra-operative scanning suite, which has revolutionised the treatment of children with neurological conditions requiring highly complex surgery and a pioneering Cardiac Hybrid Theatre and Integrated Cancer Unit, meaning a sick child can receive all of their treatment in one place. We are committed to keeping families together while their child is cared for, having funded over £1 million of family facilities and accommodation at both Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Special Care Baby Unit. We also fund arts, music and play programmes and child-friendly facilities at Bristol Children’s Hospital, which play a major role in a child’s recovery and rehabilitation, offering opportunities for distraction and enhanced wellbeing. Our charity has been recognised for our innovative fundraising initiatives, including the Gromit Unleashed and Shaun in the City arts trails, which saw millions of people hit the streets of Bristol and London to hunt down giant sculptures of beloved Aardman characters Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. The Grand Appeal receives no statutory funding and relies entirely on the generous support of the local community, businesses, grant-making trusts and other philanthropic organisations and individuals for support.
