Mission Statement
Refugee Rescue provides relief of human suffering and the saving of lives of refugees and displaced people who are affected by war, conflict or other crisis by providing, or assisting in the provision of sea rescue.
About This Cause
Refugee Rescue is a registered charity (charity number NIC 105156) which was born in response to the humanitarian crisis in Greece. In 2015 over 1 million refugees crossed the Aegean sea from Turkey to the island of Lesvos where over 4000 men, woman and children drowned and that was only the numbers recorded, many other boats that have went 'missing'. We couldn't look the other way. We have saved over 5000 lives and continue to do so, we are the humanitarian front on Europe's southern borders. We are now a rotating crew of skilled volunteers that include experienced skippers, sea rescue swimmers and SAR professionals. We provide assistance to the Hellenic Coast Guard and give help for the many refugees, in this awful inhumane situation, to reach the shores safely. We are a flexible team and go where the need is; we are currently stationed in the north (Skala Sykamnias). Refugee Rescue started in October 2015 when musician Joby Fox came to the island by himself, compelled to help other human beings to offer them empathy and basic human rights by providing a safer, more peaceful passage for these children, woman and men fleeing war. He soon returned with Jude Bennett and a small sea rescue crew and formed Refugee Rescue; a rescue team that would provide critical assistance and help at sea. The whole effort in Lesvos has been a civilian response, there were no large NGO's there. Together we can help is our motto and we still stand true to this as our ethos. We need your help.
