Mission Statement
Far too many children are killed or suffer life-changing injuries in accidents that are completely preventable. In fact, accidental injury is one of the biggest killers of children across the UK and a leading cause of disability for otherwise healthy youngsters. The poorest children are at greatest risk. They are 13 times more likely to die in preventable accidents and three times more likely to be admitted to hospital with serious injuries. The Child Accident Prevention Trust is the only UK charity to focus on preventing death and serious injury to children from avoidable accidents. Our mission is a safer world for all our children.
About This Cause
The Child Accident Prevention Trust was set up 40 years ago by two NHS consultants who could not bear to keep treating the same injuries day after day and sometimes giving the news no parent ever wants to hear. We are still driven by that same passion to keep children safe from serious avoidable harm. We work across the UK, sharing safety advice with families, providing educational materials and training to staff who support families in their local communities, and working with business and government to create a safer world for all our children. In a world awash with misinformation, we provide a trusted, authoritative voice on child safety. Our advice is relatable and non-judgemental, offering simple, practical solutions, motivating busy parents to take action and empowering the poorest parents whose children are at greatest risk. We provide our 7,000-strong network of frontline family support staff with expert advice and training, and equip them with evidence-based educational campaigns and resources to share with families. Our recent campaign on button battery safety helped parents understand the hidden dangers in many everyday household products and keep young children safe from life-changing injury or even death. We reached 570,000 families through our social media posts and 50,000 new parents through a partnership with the Scottish Government. We also reached deep into deprived communities, with 177,500 free printed resources shared with families by trusted staff in grassroots organisations, including advice in translation and picture-based booklets for parents with poor literacy. With your support, we can do so much more.
