Mission Statement
Hospital is the last place anyone wants to be, but every year thousands of the sickest adults and children are admitted for weeks, months, or even years at a time. MediCinema is a small national charity which brings the magic of cinema to patients and their families by installing and running cinemas in hospitals so patients can feel better with film.
About This Cause
MediCinema is a charity which improves the wellbeing and quality of life of NHS patients and their families through the power of the shared cinema experience and the magic of film. We build and run cinemas in hospitals equipped with space for beds, wheelchairs, and medical equipment. Our services help to improve emotional, mental, and physical health, reducing feelings of isolation, anxiety, and stress, and increasing patient resilience. Social isolation can manifest itself as an even more severe problem within the hospital setting because of the restriction it can have on a social support network, and more recently because of the additional restrictions placed on visiting by the pandemic. This has an immense impact of children’s mental health and their social development. MediCinema, thus works as an intervention for social isolation and loneliness by allowing patients to enjoy the magic of cinema with either friends and family or by creating new friends in the cinema setting and expanding their social support network. Furthermore, through the latest and best the film industry has to offer, MediCinema engages and uplifts like no other. Utilising the power of cinema to enable patients, many of whom will be experiencing complex and long term hospital stays, to experience some sense of normality and reduce both the isolation and marginalisation they may be feeling.
